The other day a friend of mine made a surprise claim about marshmallows being good to treat coughs and colds. The skeptic in me reared it's ugly little head and had me rushing to the inter to check out this claim. Well, what do you know? I found many different sites claims just that. It turns out that using marshmallows to help cure sore throats, coughs and colds date back to ancient times. It all began with the Egyptians using the root of the marshmallow plant. There are people today that believe that it is better for you than over the counter or prescription drugs, cheaper to use, easier to get, and have no side effects. I saw a few different people stating that it really works. I am still a little skeptic but you know what? I think the next time I have a sore throat, cough, or cold I just might try it. What have I got to lose? Do you think you would try this remedy? With Easter just around the corner it could be the perfect time to try it. Everywhere you go they have marshmallow peeps and bunnies displayed. It might be worth a try.

I don't know if I'd try the typical marshmallows I see at the grocers in the candy isle but if I found organic marshmallows I would. I just don't trust industry processing of candy.

If I find any I will @HazySue but so far all I've come across are typical candy marshmallows which probably is not what would be good for someone to consume. All those additives when they are processed can be more harmful that helpful.

@rebelann they are filled with sugar. I think that is what soothes the throat.

I would definitely try it. My cough and sore throat seem to be gone now but if I had seen this a few days ago I definitely would have given it a try.

Well, the Althaea officinalis (Marsh Mallow plant) is a medicinal plant that nothing have to do with the modern marshmallows that are made with sugar and cornstarch. Seen the ingredients I really doubt they can be good fore a sore throat, may be for a cough, due to the high content of sugar.

I did read something about the modern day off the shelf marshmallows of today working . I do think it is because of the sugar as you say. It seems to sooth the throat.

@HazySue This is weird, I do not like a lot the marshmallows, but the few times I tried once, they made my throat itchy.

@LadyDuck wow, I hadn't heard of that happening. I guess there is something in them that you could be sensitive too.

I know, that's why I went on the internet to check it out. There are many people who say they have tried to marshmallows of today and they worked for them. To me it is just an interesting subject.

@HazySue sometimes it is just the power of suggestion. I can't think of how the sugar sweet marshmallow candy would do much other than stimulate saliva, which might help a sore throat, but not a cough.

@Morleyhunt You are probably right. It's like the placebos or sugar pills that seem to work wonders with some. Mind over matter, for sure.

I think I'll look that up! If it works it might be a lot better than spending $100 on a doctor's office call can who knows how much on prescriptions. I rarely get sick but when I do I try to avoid the doctor because I don't have insurance. Everything is so expensive but marshmallows are still cheap.

It's certainly worth a try. With the cost of medical care it is certainly worth trying.

it's the first time i've heard of it. hopefully, you'll remember and have marshmallows on hand when you finally get a sore throat, cough or cold! i might not since it's not something we always have. i now tend to put sliced ginger in hot water and sip it.

Maybe I should have some marshmallows to ward off any bugs that may be lurking around!
