We dodged the bullet, again

United States
May 1, 2017 6:48am CST
Early yesterday afternoon we were put under a tornado watch through the evening hours. That meant I got out all my 'Tornado gadgets' - lanterns, radio, NOAH radio, etc. It is my ritual and not only gives me something to do it makes me feel in control to a point. About 6 pm or I flipped on the news and it looked like all heck breaking loose on the weather map. They were talking 'rotation' which I know means a possible tornado. The National Weather Service issued the tornado warning and when they showed the direction it was heading I wasn't very happy - the storm containing that rotation was headed right for us. I continued watching and the weatherman kept saying that maybe the rotation was weakening, maybe there is no tornado. Fifteen minutes later the NWS ended the tornado watch but made it a severe thunderstorm warning. That they were right about.....although the storm hit us there was very little lightening, just heavy rain and strong winds. We had already put things away outside and taken all the hanging plants down or they would have blown half way across the state! All we lost was satellite for a a short time. After that it was just rain and now, Monday morning, it is still raining, but no sever weather. I wonder how many bullets will can dodge? Photo from Pixabay

Hope you can keep dodging those bullets. I'd probably have a panic attack if i saw a tornado heading in my direction.

@Marilynda1225 The damage from Sandy was far more reaching than one tornado - since it was NY/NJ and the coast of Jersey is still not back to normal. Not sure if I had a choice which I would prefer. At least with SAndy there was time to leave, with a tornado you can't run from it.

@AbbyGreenhill I've only seen TV coverage when storms cause devastation. The only real life aftermath I've seen is after Superstore Sandy and my daughter was still living on Staten Island NY

It has rained during all the night and it is still raining now, not the best start of May, but at least it is less cold and it does not snow.

@AbbyGreenhill Looking outside I see that the top of the hills is white, I supposing is snowing not far from here and in no more than 4 weeks it will be too hot. Crazy weather.

I believe it is snowing in a few places in the US - hard to imagine snow yesterday when it was 87 here.

I saw online some of the damage done by the tornado. Do we have nine lives or one?

Those tornadoes were in TX and it's the same system that hit us, but thank God no tornadoes in TN, not that I know of anyway.

I'm glad it turned out safe for you @AbbyGreenhill . I missed the bullet too here in Texas. The tornadoes touched down just to the northeast of me on Saturday. I've been here 20 years and so far (fingers crossed), they have just missed me in one direction or another. If one were to hit, I'd be like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz; since I live in a mobile home and there's no where to hide.

I didn't realize we moved to "Tornado Alley South' when we moved to E TN. we never own a home w/o a basement and I'm sure glad we have one just in case. They tell mobile home people to go visit a friend with a solid home when storms hit. I saw those tornadoes on the news, I cry now more so since we saw it up close and person 6 years ago.

@nanette64 Basements add a lot of money to the cost of a home, which is one reason people don't have them...in other cases it's the soil or water table.

@AbbyGreenhill The weird thing here in Texas is that there are no basements either; which doesn't make sense. In Nebraska, everybody had one. My closest neighbor has a brick house but no basement. The worst tornado I've ever been in was in 1975 in Omaha, Nebraska. There was 1 main tornado and 5 others circling around it. If it wasn't for the fact that I lived at the bottom of a hill, I'd have been a gonner.

We have had a lot of rain again, and the only rain free day in the forecast is Wednesday (also the only day I'm committed for the entire day). Getting my daily walks in is a matter of timing. This morning we went early...it was spitting a bit of rain, but not the thunderstorms we are supposed to get later today.

We had been in a drought since last spring and with all the rain we had just this month we don't need another drop! But i'll take rain over a tornado.

@AbbyGreenhill we've had so much rain, the trail along Lake Ontario is under water. Considering how large these lakes are....that is a lot of water. The water level in Lake Erie is also much higher than normal.

@Morleyhunt I guess flooding is an issue all over the place right now.

Sounds nasty. We rarely take anything in. We'd be really surprised if we got one of your storms. We wouldn't know what hit us.

Where we live we have wind all the time. I don't remember a day w/o wind the almost 4 years we lived here..but 60 mph winds in these storms can do damage and blow things around a lot.

@AbbyGreenhill We still sometimes remark on how calm it is here as we used to live where it was windy, particularly in the mornings.

I feel better getting out all the 'gear' even if I know that it wouldn't really help if the worst actually did happen

It was windy and rainy here yesterday. We didn't have a tornado though. It was scary anyway. At least today is sunny.
