Thirty-three years to build an 'Ideal Palace'

Today we went to see an extraordinary creation: Ferdinand Cheval’s Ideal Palace. Cheval was a postman who, in April 1879 and at the age of 43, stumbled upon a stone so unusual he was moved to create a fairytale palace. Over the next 33 years, he worked on 10,000 days, spending 93,000 hours on his palace. Included was a tomb with a double slab where he wished to be buried. This request was refused so he then spent another 8 years building an equally unusual tomb in the cemetery of Hauterives. He died at the age of 88 and is buried in his tomb. As the village postman he walked some 40 kms per day on foot. His spare time was spent collecting stones to create his palace. His inspiration came from the countryside, illustrated magazines and later by postcards that began to appear in 1890. He had no training whatsoever but his palace is now recognised as a world reference of ‘outsider art’ and has been acclaimed by many. In 1969 it was declared a historical monument of naïve art. The first visitors arrived around 1905 and Cheval was able to show them around his monument. In the 1930s, shortly after his death, his unique work came to be recognised os a work of art in its own right. This is probably long enough for one post but the website is if you want to know more. I’ve included a photo of the model so to give you an idea of what it is like. I couldn’t get far enough back to capture the real thing in total. You can walk up to the top terraces and peek into the various ‘rooms’. His trusty wooden wheel-barrow also has its own shelter. He has also put a lot of sayings and explanations here and there on the stones. Edited later: I didn't find it really impressive or attractive at all although many other artists have praised it. I've never really been attracted to such 'off-beat' creations.

I admire the hard work of this mailman, but I cannot say that I like this very unusual palace.

@JohnRoberts I'm pleased you like it. I don't want to just put up stuff I like - although mostly I do I guess. Although it does nothing for me, I think it is great that someone else has enjoyed the post. I'll add another photo for you.

@JudyEv leaves one question did he not have anything else to do in 33 years???

It isn't really my 'thing' but you have to admire the effort he has put in.

Its not attractive; however, is amazing to spend so much time working on something he clearly enjoyed doing in his spare time.

He even put in a shelter for his wheelbarrow.

That is amazing!! That man had a great talent, it's almost unbelievable that he could have done this all on his own with all the intricate carvings and detail. I wish I could see this in person but your post is the next best thing. Thanks for a wonderful interlude in my boring morning!

That is fascinating. Found a photo of it online. Will post it here. What an interesting thing to see. The model does it justice but the actual is really impressive.

It's a bit like a folly. There are no real 'rooms' - nothing bigger than a cupboard anyway

When I want to be polite and don't know what else to use I pick from 'different, interesting or unusual'. I'm glad I saw it but it left me a bit cold,

Sounds like a beautiful place to visit knowing that it was built that long.

It is now a very popular tourist attraction. It would bring in a lot of money to his village.

@judyev There appear to be there ill-clad, naughty ladies to the left of the edifice, or do I need new glasses?

@JudyEv I got enough of Archimedes when I was in Sicily in March - that's where he was from. Not everyone's favourite mathematician.

I'm looking at the detail and find it fascinating. The photo at the top looks like a tiny display and below the photo with people in it is large, are there two ?

The top photo is of a model to give an overall view of the place. I put that up before I thought about adding more photos at the end of each comment.

It looks amazing. I love this kind of stuff. There is a similar stone structure (not a tomb) created by a man in Florida that I visited.

I've heard about that and in Broome, Western Australia, a priest built a church which is richly decorated with pearl shells - which isn't quite the same thing I know..
