Do you feel that people make assumptions about you based on your looks?

There is a saying - "Don't judge a book by its cover." However, many a times we do not go by this saying we make assumption about others based on their looks. For example in a party if one is wearing expensive clothes and accessories, we assume him/her to be a rich man/woman. If someone is wearing casual accessories, we assume either s/he is careless about the presence of others or s/he loves to wear what s/he feels like. Do you make assumptions about those whom you do not know actually, based on their looks? Image courtesy - Google

Oh! I see it is a other way round in your case. People assume by your looks that you are a snob. Could you guess what makes them think so about you? or You do not mind being mistaken as a snob?

I actually initially judge a person by his /her looks. Though, after I have spoken with her/him I more or less would think less of how she/he looks. I am always mistaken for a rich woman. I don't know why.

It means you take your time before you actually assume about a person. You immediately do not make a view about someone based on his/her looks only, till you have spoken to him/her. It is interesting to hear that others mistake you as a rich woman. I also think that you are a very rich woman.

Sometimes I am mistaken as a rich lady too and sometimes as a maid. True, many people judge by looks. Of course I dress differently when I was schooling/working but at home or at wet market I dress 'rags' sometimes.

@AkoPinay It means that based on the situation, you wear such clothes which could make others assume that you are a rich woman and sometimes you are in such a shabby clothes that others could mistake you as a maid.

Well..sometimes but not because I hate that person or something..It is just that sometimes when you do not know the person you describe his/her personality by their looks, how they dress, how they carry themselves at the public places..Why? simply because you will dress according to how it makes you comfortable, right?

I understand that you make an assumption about an unknown person through his looks and the way he carries himself at a public place. Do you feel that your assumption turns out to be correct, if you later come to know more about that person?

Yes it happens most of the time with majority of the people. Subconsciously we do judge people based on their outward appearances. In India I see youngsters referring to saree clad traditionally dressed ladies as auntie , without knowing anything about their educational background , or personality ..

Yes, it is general tendency here in India to judge others by their appearance and dress, specially in functions/gathering. You have rightly pointed out that if anyone is wearing a Saree, she is addressed as Auntie, without knowing about her actual status.

@kiran8 Yes, you are right that wearing western dresses even by married women is considered cool at the cost of wearing traditional dresses. Our Indian traditional dresses are far better than western dresses but it is difficult to make younger generation understand.

@dpk262006 It is a bias , leaning towards Western dresses and culture is considered as being cool..the same youngster will shy away and want to marry a girl his parents have chosen

I do not judge by their dresses or jewels, but by their manners. You can wear luxury clothing but your manners show that you are uneducated and not coming from a good family.

I fully agree with your point of view that one should not be judged through her/his dress or accessories s/he is wearing but we should make an opinion about a person by his conduct and manner. Do you feel that others make an assumption about you, based on your looks or what you wear?

@LadyDuck You mean to say that many European women love to look elegant (irrespective of their financial status). However, you wear normal dress and accessories (if need be) whenever you go out.

@dpk262006 You know, here in Europe women dress more or less elegant when they go out. I do not like to wear jewelry, but I surely do not lack manners, thanks to my parents and the school they choose for me.

As people do make assumptions about me (some of which are completely wrong), I am conscious about not judging a book by its cover. But when I can hear a person speak, see their mannerisms, or at least observe them for a while, I can tell what kind of person they are (which means I didn't just look at the cover . . . I did bother to read a few pages ). Looks, clothing and such only tell a part of a story, maybe, and that's not the whole story.

It is interesting to hear that others make assumptions about you, which are hardly correct and they are wide off the mark. . It is wiser on your part that you read few pages of book, rather than judging the same by its cover and then you decide what kind of book it is or it could be. I agree with you that looks etc. only tell part of a story, yet they tell ''something'' about a person.

Well since I am quite unnoticeable by most, I do not worry about what they will think or assume. Besides, if they voice their assumptions about me and they are incorrect, I will put them right. Yes people do assume on looks whether they like to admit it or not. I do at times as well.

I must thank you for going to the crux of the discussion. How come you are unnoticeable while in a function or in party or you dress up in such a way that others may not pay attention towards you? You are very right that people (that include us also) make an assumption based on looks, but they do not admit it easily.

@dpk262006 Hi dpk..I like that you say crux as that is what we say hahah the crux of the matter..I can easily relate to it. I choose to be unnoticeable for I am a chameleon. If I showed my plumage, it can cause too much attention to me, which I prefer not to have.

It is already a custom for most people to judge someone through looks. It happens in most cases especially when we just meet someone for the first time. It is the society where we live that taught us to be this way. But then, it is our responsibility to educate ourselves properly.

@dpk262006 I am sure I do. Heck I judge the performance of my favorite sport teams. I don't feel admiring something unique in a person's appearance is wrong. Why view looks in a negative light! Appearance can also be a positive thing. It doesn't just relate to people. You might judge a beautiful sunset or a painting. I am just providing another perspective on your post. I like to see things from various viewpoints.

I think the only time I react to what anyone wears is if it doesn't match the event or place that they are attending. One example is during a wedding - bride specifically asks that no one wears shorts or flip flops and then you see someone wearing that. For most part, I really don't care what other people wear as long as they are okay and are not stepping or hurting anyone else.

I don't make assumptions based on how well dressed someone is because nowadays it's too easy to get knockoffs. It's hard to tell whether it's authentic or not. However, when a person speaks fluently with much confidence I always assume he has graduated from a good school. Sometimes that assumption is wrong.

I understand your point of view that you do not make an assumption about a person solely on the outfit s/he is wearing because outfits could be even taken on rent, s/he may not own it. Of course, one's mannerism, way of talking, gestures and his/her attitude tell a lot about him. Do you feel that others make an assumption about you, based on your looks or what you wear?
