Do you give money to homeless people who are panhandling? How about charitable organizations who collect donations in front of a store? photo- newstalkkit.com Google images

@dgobucks226 Tomás lived a beautiful little life until the very end. There are many children who do not have that.

Yes I do give a dollar or 50 cents to the few on the corner here sometimes. Not always, only when I can. No big donations here.

Our community has been asked to not give donations to the homeless. Why? Because if we do the programs that have been put into place by the city will go away. I have seen people out in front of a store we frequent that had a better coat on than the one I had on. That doesn't work for me.

@dgobucks226 .....Yes, and then they never seek any help.

It appears giving donations only perpetuates the problem?

I never give money to panhandlers and only contribute to charities I'm sure are reputable. The only time I give to those collecting outside stores is Salvation Army or the Girl Scouts when they are selling their cookies

I do give but selectively. However, I feel it is more lucrative than real work and that is a dampener for society - siva

Yes, the question is are we really helping by giving panhandlers money or enabling them to stay in their situation. Very good point if I'm understanding your meaning?

@dgobucks226 Yes, that is what I was driving at. Once in a while I read of panhandlers who are wealthier than those who slog for a living. It is tough to kick the habit once easy money becomes a habit - siva

We do give directly, to worthy organizations. Some are legit, but not very many.

I understand, there are so many organizations. We had a problem with hurricane relief where people were setting up phony charitable websites for donations.

Are they real or fake? Some of them in my country are not genuine beggars. There are certain rich people behind them.

That is true. One would like to help out, but not if they are faking it and are lazy. It can be hard to know the difference.

I don't directly give money to a panhandler. I prefer to give money to Salvation Army and a few hospitals.

I am the same. I also will donate clothes to Goodwill or place them in the bins for Veterans or other organizations.

The local police requires not to give anything to beggars, the local charities take care of them. I donate sending the money (or clothing and so on) directly to the charities. No one is allowed to collect donations in front of the stores.

I was approached by a woman who claimed she had gotten her period unawares and needed money for feminine products. She was all smiles as I reached into my purse, but her smile disappeared when I handed her a tampon. I knew she was lying, but what could she say?

Now that was interesting. Unfortunately, many are not in need of assistance as they claim and just want a free handout. The ones in need of medical help or assistance get lumped into this group and are looked upon with suspicion. Thanks for sharing!

I do not like being accosted on the street. I don't trust those collecting at stores. They could be fakers.

There are so many charities that collect at stores not to mention when you pay at checkout it's just overkill.

I will give money to street musicians and homeless guys that aren't begging. If they are panhandling, I don't.
