$25 an hour? Sure, I have a couple hours to spare...

So I had a sound gig kind of sneak up on me. Got a call yesterday from one of the other guys in town that does sound work. Seems he has to go out of town today, and needed someone to 'fill in' for him at a jazz band rehearsal out at the college this afternoon. The equipment is already set up, I just need to sit and 'ride herd' on the mixer board for a few hours. And since it is just a rehearsal and not a public performance, I don't have to worry about the actual sound going out through the main speakers to the theater, I just need to sit and perhaps adjust the two stage monitors for the band. 1 vocalist, two sax players, 1 trombone, 1 trumpet, 1 flute, piano, bass and electric guitar + a drummer. And the college pays $25 an hour to whomever is 'running' the soundboard. Which will be me. Jon did warn me that the students are pretty much 'amateurs' about sound, so I may get some weird questions from them, but if you pay me right, Scar will provide any answers you need. October is shaping up to be a fairly productive month for earnings. (I edited in a photo and short video from rehearsal)

That sounds exciting. But please familiarize your self with millennial speak. Many times, I am clueless about what they mean. And they frown. Sensitive, I get offended. Nevertheless, psyche your self to a good $25 an hour. Student events are always fun. We could always say how silly they are for this thing and that, and then remember our good old days when we were as silly, Have fun.

@JolietJake Teach the children well. Your chance to do so. Our health might slowly go by. Ha ha. I must put quotations marks there. Seriously, show them how to dream. With gadgets on hand all the time, they seem to have lost the dreams. Give them the fun.

I'll just give them my patented "What the heck did you say?" look and go about whatever I was doing

Yes, millennials are like foreigners sometimes, with a different language and a different set of values.

@JolietJake winter is coming and it will be good to have a little nest egg stored for those unknowns that pop up. Wish I could find a way to make a little extra this month. Heating season will soon be upon us.

It's been a good month, I already made $450 and now I have this plus another $100 coming for sound work this weekend.

It'll just be 2 hours max, it's only a rehearsal and the guy that normally does it had to go out of town

Nice to get a gig that promises to be relatively stress-free. AND get paid so well for it. But $25 an hour doesn't sound much really - not compared to a plumber or something.

@JolietJake Come to think of it I'd want a lot more to be cleaning blocked toilets.

Comparing the actual work involved...pushing a couple of sliders to control volume...it pays just fine

That is great. At least you are not sharing with the band. My son told me the band gets well paid, but his has eight or nine members so individually, it is not much even for good gigs.

@JolietJake That is not so bsd. Now they have an agent I think my son's band will do better.

I used to work exclusively with a 5 piece acoustic band, we split everything 6 ways...usually ended up with $50-$75 each from gigs

That's really great, you're doing a lot of this work lately, but at least you won't have to lug your stuff for this one. Sitting and playing with buttons for those wages is wonderful-enjoy it!

The college has some pretty top-of-the-line equipment, they overhauled their sound system a few years ago

I've had a few others gigs out there, I've ran sound for a few productions at the theater, once when they did the musical version of 'Shrek' and once when they did the play M*A*S*H

So what have you decided? Accepting it? I think this is a good deal. Something will come from sitting before the drums. Something will be paid for observing the synchronization of the music between the curtain and other instruments.
