A Claytons Wake - the wake to have when you're not having a wake

@Platespinner has been working hard for ages providing costumes for a play. Now the pressure is off as far as sewing goes but she is still very busy. So her holiday from sewing isn’t really a holiday. I commented that she was having a Claytons holiday and Joanne queried me on this. When I wrote it I did wonder if readers would understand the reference to Claytons. Claytons is a non-alcoholic liquid packaged to resemble whisky and marketed during the 70s and 80s as ‘the drink you have when you're not having a drink’. The term is now used to signify something or someone that isn’t what it claims to be. It is sometimes used as an insult such as a Clayton’s chef. Within our group of friends we were having a discussion once about what a pity it was that we couldn’t attend our own wakes. There’d be great food and drink and everyone would say wonderful things about you. However you wouldn’t be there to enjoy it. So we came up with the idea of taking it in turns to have a Claytons wake – a pretend wake so whoever was ‘dead’ could have the pleasure of joining in the day. However when we thought the oldest member of the group should be the first to have a Claytons wake, he got very spooked and wasn’t a bit keen on the idea. So we had to drop it. A shame really, don’t you think? The photo is of a friend’s dog. He isn’t really dead. He just likes to sleep like that.

It sounded fun at the time but quite possibly no-one would have wanted to be the first. It wouldn't have bothered me.

Oh goodness, this is morbid, I would never do something like this, not to mention that in our country there is not good food and drinks at people wake.

It seemed a funny idea at the time but it would really be testing fate wouldn't it?

@judyev How very practical to have your wake before you go.

@JudyEv you could use the coffin as a drinks table before you get into it.

@JudyEv Well I don't intend having an actual funera though I do i tend dying. I'll just be taken directly to the graveyard from my deathbed without any fuss and with minimum expense.

It would be nice to hear people speak nicely about you - providing they did of course!

Now, that's an interesting concept. I haven't heard the term before, but I think it's a good one. The dog looks comfortable, totally relaxed. Beautiful dog.

@JudyEv I bet he's a beauty. I had a border collie - black and white though.

It is a lovely dog - a brown-and-white Border Collie. I think they call them 'chocolate'.

It seemed a good idea at the time but I guess it was pretty silly really.

@teamfreak16 We should have drawn the 'deceased' out of a hat.

@JudyEv Maybe you should make it a communal wake, do all of you at the same time so no one feels like they are the next up for the real thing lol

I wouldn't want to tempt fate like that, even though I'm not superstitious. I've never heard of a 'Claytons'.

If it had come to the crunch probably none of us would have wanted to be first. But didn't you know? It's bad luck to be superstitious!

I never heard this phrase before and I really don't think I'd like a Claytons wake. I'm not keen on wakes as it is never mind my own

Fair enough. It's probably good that the idea fell through.
