Same-sex marriage to be legalised in Australia

A month or so ago, Australian citizens were asked to vote on whether or not they wanted same-sex marriage legalised. I wrote a discussion about it at the time and promised to let myLot friends know the results when the time came.
The time has now come and the results are now in. The vote is overwhelmingly in favour of the proposition. The Government should be able to make this law by Christmas.
There was an excellent response from the public who were asked to fill in and post survey forms. Sometimes, unless it is compulsory, very few bother to participate but many of those eligible felt strongly enough about the issue to send in their surveys.
On a national basis, 62% voted in favour of the proposal, a total of 7.82 million people. In my own state, Western Australia 64% voted in favour. Every state voted Yes and only 17 electorates out of 150 voted No.
Here is the breakdown of age-groups in my own electorate where 79% voted Yes (81,122 people).
Who Voted Yes
Male 76%
Female 82%
18-24 years 68%
25-34 years 68%
35-44 years 73%
45-54 years 79%
55-64 years 85%
65+ years 89%
It is interesting that a greater percentage in the older age groups voted Yes.
So there it is. We’ll all have to find something to talk about now.
The photo is of a donkey orchid, one of our wildflowers. It has no relation to the post although I guess there were some 'donkey' votes recorded.

Really, I never thought 65 plus would vote that high percentage, i had thought they're to be the least.

I don't think it should have to be voted on, to each his own I always say. Life is to short to bother about what others want to do. One should be able to marry anyone they choose to

It has been legalized in the U.S., also.

@kobesbuddy It has been a controversial issue here. The fact that nearly 80% of eligible voters handed in their survey attests to that. There are many who disapprove.

At the very least it acknowledges the legitimacy of the union and safeguards one partner's interests should the spouse die.

It is interesting that the older people are that the more in favor they are. It doesn't seem to make sense.

Perhaps the older ones had a bit more time to think about it and actually got around to filling out their forms and submitting. I know quite a lot voted against it simply because they didn't like the term 'marriage'. If the union had been called something else they would have voted 'yes'.

I don't know if it is legalised in my country too. More people are open minded now

@JudyEv The thought came to my mind, what would you use as an image for a marriage between 2 guys? Two flowers wouldn't work! Two bulls? Two male lions?
(Those two flowers were not too obvious, since there were other flowers and buds in the background

I'm glad to see so many people voted no matter which way a person voted, as I hear to many people complain and not vote in this country. My opinion if you choose to not vote, then you shouldn't be complaining about the outcome.
I'm not surprised by the older voter being so high, as I have many friends in a long term relationship that are gay including one couple that have been together over 50 years.
