Photo Study Ship In A Bottle

Photo taken by me – ship in a bottle, Greenwich, London

I used to have a model ship in a bottle at home in my youth. I have no idea what happened to it in the end. Ships in bottles are fascinating as the ship invariably looks too big to fit into the bottle. Methods of making them vary, with bottles being blown round the ship, sails and rigging initially being flat to the deck but pulled up into place with tiny strong cotton, false bases in the bottles, etc. The ship in the bottle here is a very large one used as a statue in Greenwich, London, a major centre of maritime trade. It’s a lovely sight that shows history with a sense of humour. Arthur Chappell

They've always fascinated me too. Never could figure out how they got it in there.

I used to stare at one in my grandmother's home back when I was a kid and always wondered how the ship got into the bottle.

That picture is so cool, what a great idea for a statue. I remember when I finally saw how the ships were put in the bottles, it was an ah ha moment.
