How should we use salt? I think we should use salt sparingly. A bit here and there and a bit now and then. Is salt a danger to one's health? I think too much salt is harmful and I think it can raise our blood pressure to where it might be a problem. Hod to you use salt? What kind of salt do you use? Is it a problem?

Since salt regulates many important body functions, without it we die. It is a necessary nutrient which the body does not produce. It is especially important to those who sweat a lot. Of course - too much of anything won't be good for our health.

Yes, sodium is very important and it is true that vegetables probably have enough sodium but salt makes some foods taste so good. Of course most people eat very few vegetables. When I eat an avocado, I just put a little salt and it tastes amazing. It actually tastes great even without salt but a bit of salt brings it another level.

I have changed lately the type of salt I use. And there are several mels where I don´t add salt.

What kind of salt do you use now? When you don't use salt, what do you use to make the meal taste good?

@1hopefulman I use a special salt that has a lot less sodium. And I use some herbs. Oregano and chives help a lot

Too much is wrong too little is not good either. I use coarse sea salt most of the time. I also buy some special salts like Himalayan salt, French "fleur de sel" and Grey sea salt from Bretagne (France).

A couple of years ago my hubby and I went on a plant based diet. My legs had been horribly swollen from water intake. The pills my doc gave me for the issue just messed with my blood pressure so I had to quit taking them. Since I started eating more plants and fiber foods like brown rice, my legs are no longer near so swollen. I think it had to do with my salt intake. When I eat at a restaurant I immediately get leg swelling.

@sallypup Interesting! Have you tried adding a squirt of fresh lemon juice or apple cider vinegar along with all the other things you mentioned?

So salt has a negative affect of your body? How do you make your rice taste good?

@1hopefulman Salt does mess negatively with my body, yes. Good question about rice. I do use soy sauce and that is salt but I use more garlic powder then dice in onion and green pepper and sometimes mushrooms. That unsalted garlic powder really wakes the rice up!

I actually don't ever use salt unless it is already in the cooking. Doctors actually scolded me for not having enough salt.

@1hopefulman Not really, I'm just fanatical about how much salt is in everything. Always reading the labels. My low salt chips have 56 mgs in the entire bag instead 400 mgs per serving. If there are three servings, then that's 1200 mgs per bag!!! They recommend 2,000 mgs per day. We're all waaay over that limit!!!

Yes, salt is a flavor enhancer but we do need to be careful with it as so many people have an abnormal blood pressure and are on medication. I like a little salt on some foods but there are days when I eat things that do not need salt.

@1hopefulman Actually they don´t have anything like quality where I live and its only logical as I am almost in the middle of nowhere when it comes to shops and the like. You have to buy what there is and not what you want. At the moment they have a more decent brand of salt but it could get better for me at least.

The only salt I get now is in whatever food it might be in. I took salt from my diet many years ago because it caused swelling of my legs and ankles. I use Mrs. Dash salt substitute and don't miss the salt at all.

I use salt liberally. It tenderizes meat, it adds flavor, and it helps to draw other flavors into foods when you brine things.
