What animal scares you the most?

When I'm hiking, I often come across wildlife. Most often I see ground squirrels, bunnies, wild turkeys, turkey vultures, hawks, owls, cows, and the occasional coyote. But I sometimes run into snakes, some of which turn out to be rattlesnakes. The first couple of times I had to deal with rattlesnakes, I just about jumped out of my shoes. But I'm more or less gotten used to them, and they don't bother me any more. They let you know if you get too close. I'm not sure what animal scares me the most here in California--maybe raccoons, as they're so bold. Or black widows, because they're everywhere (but very shy). Up in Montana, the animal that scares the me the most is the grizzly bear. They are unpredictable, and will sometimes attack for no apparent reason or dine on campers in sleeping bags. I've run into black bears up in Montana (they ignored me), but never a grizzly. Anyway, what animal scares you the most?

Second place is probably snakes, for the simple reason that “they” say the only way you can tell if it’s poisonous or harmless is if it has a pit between its eyes, and who is gonna get that freaking close? The animal that terrifies me the most, however, is the homosapien. Animals in the wild will only kill to eat. Humans kill for no freaking reason whatsoever.

I was going to say that too - humans are the scariest creatures of them all!

@FourWalls Oh yes - I cannot believe it's another shooting - in a school . I really take this to heart because just yesterday afternoon we got a mass phone call from the school saying there had been rumors on social media about a shooting that would be happening this day - but with investigators involved it was found to be false. Well here we are today and this happens but in Kentucky .

@much2say — if you didn’t hear the news, we had a 15-year-old kill two 15-year-old classmates in western Kentucky today. Unbelievable.

I don't venture out into the woods so I couldn't tell you. A grizzly bear would have me $hitting my pants for sure. I'm not afraid of snakes, raccoons, possums, deer, or whatever other random stuff we have around here in Jersey.

What gets me about raccoons is how that give me that "Yes, may I help you?" look when I catch them on my balcony. They don't seem the slightest bit afraid, as if they could turn into a Monty Python bunny at any moment.

@TheHorse We've had a possum coming up to the back door this past week to the compost bowl. My bad orange cat has been going nuts. They've been nose to nose at the glass storm door and then the orange cat flips out and scratches at the glass trying to get to the possum. . . trying to get out to go make a friend. The possum never even blinked. No fear.

Snakes, I fear snakes, the only other dangerous animals in the area are the wild boars, but I can see them very well and stay away from them, while not always you can see a snake fast enough to avoid their bites.

@TheHorse We have vipera aspis here, they are venomous, they are silent and small and they love to sunbath on rocks or on your pathway in the garden. Untreated bites are fatal. They have very bad temper, they see your foot and they bite.

@LadyDuck Do you have a picture? I've never heard of them. Are they common? I've only seen about six rattlesnakes here on dozens (perhaps hundreds) of hikes, and they are quite antisocial.

Locally, it is not unlikely that you could see a rattlesnake in the summer, maybe even a cougar browsing through the area. Black bears are pretty common and I would not want to get very close to one with cubs.

I really wouldn't like to tangle with a wild pig. Some around here let pregnant sows loose in the bush so they'll have something to hunt in a few years. I can't understand such people but no doubt they think it's okay.

Interesting. I think some of the wild boars around here were once domesticated (or mated with released pigs that had been domesticated). We saw some at a distance on a hike, but I didn't "interact" with them.

@TheHorse I think ours are only dangerous if you get between them and the litter or if you're in the way of somewhere they're going.

Our cats do not care for the racoons around here. They are mean fighters. I don't care for the grizzlies cause I would be more apt to run into them beings that I love the mountains. I have heard of some hair raising(no pun intended) tales of people meeting up with them in the mountains. I've never seen a rattler in the wild. Don't care for the desert type lands so don't come near them.

I'm mostly not afraid of any critters - until I actually encounter them . We have seen the occasional snake while hiking, but I don't get scared of them. I will say I see, while hiking too, those black beetles . . . all a consistent black . . . for some reason they look creepy to me (more than spiders) - I might jump back!

@TheHorse I looked them up. I know I've seen bugs with that coloring, but I don't know if those were them. That kind of sting would hurt like heck . . . this is why I keep telling my kids NOT to pick up bugs we don't know about !

Beetles are...beetles. We have something here called Velvet Ants, which are wingless wasps we encounter on hikes in arid areas. Their sting is supposed to hurt more that five bees at once.

I am scared of bear, wolves, coyotes, cougars, spiders to name a few. I'm very much an indoor person, which I'm working on as my husband loves it out doors when its nice. He's a landscaper and take great pains to do everything to the property to make it just beautiful. I have shared some pictures of his handy work. If you haven't seen those pictures you could visit my discussions and find them.
