Out my window this morning

We are going into our closest town, Donnybrook in Western Australia shortly for an Australia Day breakfast but I just have time to share with you the view from our lounge room window this morning. Three roos were enjoying their own breakfast in what we call our ‘garden’ although that is a very liberal use of the term. Doesn't the joey make an interesting outline as he steps down off the path? And you can see the Music Shack in the background where we have outdoor concerts from time to time. These two does are the quietest of all the kangaroos which frequent our 18 acres although we still can’t approach them too closely. If we are very quiet while in the house we are sometimes able to get good photos through the window. Off to read some discussions now. Have a great day everyone.

I had to look hard before I could see the one on the right (must need some new glasses). Lovely to have them in your garden.

They do blend in well don't they? Here's a close-up of the one on the left. She is very distinctive with the white facial markings.

Vince always talks to them and is very polite. The does are always 'Mrs Roo'. They are certainly more at ease with us than they used to be.

@allknowing They are beautiful birds aren't they? We used to have them on the farm. They made good watch-dogs too.

Nice picture, I needed some time to find the third one. How many kangaroos can be fed in your 18 acres?

@JudyEv Better than a flock of sheeps or goats, I would need some for a house I have in the countryside.

We sometimes have 50 or 60 down on the pasture. They keep the grass down but they go off into the bush from time to time and they'd have other areas where they'd feed too.

People pay money to see them in the zoo and you get a free view while sitting comfortably in your sofa. How cool is that

We should put $2 in a jar every time we see them. We'd soon have a fortune. We also have to drive down through them when we leave the property.

@Madshadi On the highways they (the roos) can run straight into vehicles. They decide where they're going and they head for that point. They have no idea of avoiding obstacles. If we drive very slowly they will stay where they are or just hope slowly off to one side but some take off for the bush as soon as they see a vehicle.

I just love your photo. To me its like you have your own zoo. What noises do kangaroo make? (Deer snort so I am curious on these creatures that I only see in photos.)

@sallypup They eat some leaves from trees that they like but not from all varieties. They often eat the young tender leaves of saplings that you might be trying to grow. We had to put netting round all our little trees until they got established.

They make a sort of cough occasionally but you rarely hear them making any noise at all.

That is great..hopefully some day I will have camera in hand when the deer come around here. Do the kangaroos make any noise? How do they vocalize? Have you ever heard them? The deer sound like noisy birds when they call to each other.

@JudyEv The deer sometime communicate by pawing the ground too. Like if a doe hears something and wants to alert the fawns they will do something like that. I have seen them.

@snowy22315 And if kangaroos want to warn the mob they thump the ground with one foot. At that signal the whole mob will take off.

I'd love to hear deer calling. Kangaroos 'cough' occasionally but not very often at all. I have heard them but mostly they are silent.

What a great picture. It reminded me of the herd of deer that I saw in the cemetery that I pass on my way into work. They are roughly the same colour.

@JamesHxstatic Yes, they are. If there is a good season the numbers breed up very quickly and then the farmers will be licensed to shoot a certain number.

We certainly enjoy seeing them around and house and in the paddocks. Of course, lots of farmers consider them pests. They probably do less damage in orchards, which predominate here, than in areas that grow grain crops.

@Gita17112016 They are not easy to raise. You are encouraged to take any orphans to a wildlife carer who will have expertise and more especially the right type of formula for them. They are not very tolerant of lactose so need a special milk formula.
