I’ve just read another interesting post by Lori (@LoriAMoore) entitled Have you ever been read the riot act. You can catch it here: http://www.mylot.com/post/3150840/have-you-ever-been-read-the-riot-act. It reminded me of the time our sons read us the riot act. They had reached the age where we could come and go without getting baby-sitters or worry about leaving them on their own. So we went out this night for dinner with some friends. It’s possible they weren’t home when we left and we didn’t leave a note. After our meal, we all decided to kick on at the casino. We staggered home at about 2am to find the boys sitting in the lounge about to ring the police and report us missing. We got into a lot of trouble for not letting them know what we were doing, Mind you, mostly they didn’t seem to care but in reality we could have rung or left a note. Needless to say we were thoroughly chastised and didn’t do it again! The photo is of our sons and I with the car parked in the burnt-out shell of a huge tingle tree. This eventually came down in a storm some years ago. I can’t find the exact year.

Prior to the age of cell phones I went to a neighbor a few blocks away to talk about some car repairs he would do for me. My daughter came looking for me after a while. She wondered what was keeping me so long, although she did know where I was, and it was not dark yet.

It's kind of nice to know they do worry about you isn't it?

I'm sure you were chastised. I've been read the riot act by my kids many times, on many subjects. It's always good to learn from your mistakes.

I think sometimes as parents we forget to take into account that we need to let our children know what we are doing, Now I have to answer to my dogs and they are relentless, talk about the riot act!! lol

I read the riot act to my parents when they retired. They left to go on a trip for a couple of days without telling us and I was thinking all kinds of things.

Your sons were right, I know what it means waiting for someone and not knowing what happened. About 35 years ago I called the police to find my mom. She had left to go on a one day trip without letting us know. I even sent the firefighters inside her home fearing she had fallen and was unable to call for help. You can imagine she always remembered to let me know after this episode.

@JudyEv I agree that it is worrying. The day I was unable to find my mother I called all the hospital in the city where she lived.

Oh yes. I'm sure she always remembered after that. I called the police to find Vince once. He and the dance band members had gone some distance away to a dance. They were travelling in one car. When he wasn't home at 8am I called the police. The car had broken down but they were okay. But it is very worrying.

@JohnRoberts That won't worry me too much. I'd be battling to stay up till 2am any more - although I am likely to wake at such an hour and not be able to go back to sleep.

That tree really was giant! Very cool photo! I got a chuckle reading your story picturing the police being called on you. Thank goodness they didn't actually call.

They were so little ,but knew how to resort to the police and had strong legal consciousness. You were certainly proud of them, though you got told off by the police.

not recently, as an adult... as I don't have any children to read me the riot act... lol ... but as a teenager my parents had to tell me off about not letting them know what I was doing ... especially if out on my motorbike ... lol but it is nice that they care ... lol

I can imagine! Parents always think they are the ones worrying about where their children are, they don't think they have to report to anyone!

It never occurred to me that they might worry about us. As with a lot of teenagers, they didn't seem to care very much but we were very wrong.
