About 10 years ago I needed a good idea for a Black History Month project to display in our hallway. I remembered reading about the Underground Railroad Quilts and how they aided the escape of many slaves.
I kept thinking about the quilts and finally decided that I would make this project our own. I needed to make a few changes and help it become a unique project for the kids.
Each of the quilt pieces is made out of paper squares that were 6 inches square. The kids first painted , sponged, or drew what they wanted on the different colored squares. We then affixed them onto a larger black square. and onto a big piece of black paper.
On the squares the kids went onto the computer and look up information about slavery, inventions, freedom, and anything they felt was related to Black History. We printed out the information and attached it or photos onto the squares.
When we were finished we hung the quilt on the wall. It was a success. Not only did my self-contained class loved doing it, learning a lot along the way but the other students in the school thought it was terrific.
That year was a terrific display honoring Black History Month and the kids were proud that they had a hand in providing it for the school.
