Crabby story from the fish market

Eugene, Oregon

Our best local fish market has the freshest fish from the nearby Pacific ocean. It is also a busy restaurant and when I stopped there yesterday to buy fish, the line was out the door. Most of the people were there for lunch. I needed to get to the fish counter to see what was fresh and available, so eased through the crowd. Finding some great looking Rock-fish, I waited a bit to be served. One guy got my fish and another one opened a second checkout register. I noticed this cashier had on gloves and kept shaking his right hand and grimacing while he was serving the woman in front of me. Then we saw the bandage under his glove. It was no wonder his finger hurt. Oregon's Dungeness Crab season finally opened and the crabs are brought in live to be steamed, cleaned and sold. It turned out that one feisty crab with big claws had, in self-defense, grabbed hold of this guy's middle finger and gave it a nasty bite. I did not envy the young man having to work the register with a swollen, wounded finger. Now I know why I have never gone crabbing.

Crabbing is fun! Getting your feet pinched by crabs in the ocean. . . not so much.

@JamesHxstatic I've never seen a Dungeness crab. We just have blue crabs here on the East coast. I do love me some Alaskan King Crab though!

I think it's barbaric to steam or boil living creatures. I do eat quite a lot of fish though, but not crabs or lobster.

@JamesHxstatic I don't know, but it's horrendous. Perhaps they are hard to kill because their shells protect them.

@jaboUK I may have to look into this. Thinking about it, I've not eaten crab for many years, Anne does not like them.

I sort of agree on that barbaric part, never eat lobster and rarely ever a crab. I wonder where that awful way of cooking crab came from?

Ouch! I've eaten lots of crabs, but never held a live one like that - I sure wouldn't want to be clawed by one !

I wanted to buy a whole crab the other day for supper but it was priced way to high. I will wait until they go down in price.

Understandable, it is not a humane practice.

Lucky you being able to get all that fresh seafood. Seafood here is very expensive, shellfish is not always available and if anything I get some frozen fillets.

I'm sure that was a very loooong shift for the young man! My husband loves crab. I like the taste of it too, but I find the process of getting the meat out of the shell to be very time-consuming and tedious. I'm not sure it's worth all that work for me.

True, and as @JaboUK pointed out, the cooking method seems barbaric.
