I haven't been wasting my time while I've been away

We’ve spent two days taking photos at a horse endurance ride. I’ll have photos of some of the horses and riders to share with you later. We parked the car in the bush close to one of the dirt tracks that the riders travelled on. There were six different divisions, each with its own circuit to follow.
There was no way of knowing quite when the horses would appear on the track or from which direction they would come. So we took our chairs, a few snacks and our books to read while we waited for some action.
I also took a big bundle of binder twine/baling strings and a half-finished mat that I’m making. I’ve now finished the mat so although I wasn’t taking photos I didn’t waste my time. In the top half of the photo you can see the mat. It’s a great way to recycle these strings which would otherwise be wasted.
The bottom half shows the bush area where we were waiting. In the background you might be able to see Vince in his chair and in the left foreground is a grass-tree which I wrote about recently although this is a different species and won’t grow to great heights.
I’ve posted before about an ancient grass tree (Xanthorrhoeaceae) which is growing on the roadside not too far from our home in south-west Western Australia....

@JudyEv As you wrote "There was no way of knowing quite when the horses would appear on the track or from which direction they would come", I was thinking that you could have not seen a horse
. I prefer the Tour de France we know the roads they take

I can see Vince.
String is not wasted here either but I'm not much for crafts, I use them outside to do things like create a laundry line if it's sturdy twine or to tie two pieces of whatever together when I need to create shade. I still don't have enough shade.
Some of the flora and fauna I see in your picture looks similar to some that we have in our desert here.

I like the color of the mat.I know the grass trees are extremely slow growing. But is it true that it takes more than 10 years to grow a trunk?

@Shiva49 Sometimes it can be really hard to find time to read. I now have one that stays in the car and if for some reason I have to wait for Vince I start reading. It is a series of talks with different people so it is a good one to read in dribs and drabs.

It's hard to explain about the mat. We use a bag needle - like a huge darning needle which can be threaded with the string and you go over and over a 'core' of about 10 strings. Then you just keep going round and round till you think it is big enough.

@Hannihar Yes, quite different and it's something I can do in the shed while waiting for Vince. We might be working on a project but then he needs to weld so I'll do a bit of my mat while he's busy. It doesn't matter if it gets a bit of dirt on it.

The strings were used round small bales of hay. I cut the strings at the knot and save them to make the mats. We don't buy hay anymore so I probably won't make too many more but they are an easy thing to work on if you have to fill in a bit of time. Sometimes the strings are blue but they can also be black or pink.

@JudyEv Aren't you afraid of snakes when you walk around the bush?..

@epiffanie Not really. We didn't wander around a lot but mostly the snakes would get of your way. We watched where we walked but it was all fine.

I guess you were fully covered. I have a mat something like that my grandmother made out of bread wrappers. I have it hung in display in my house.

This one isn't really flash enough to hang anywhere. It will have feet wiped on it somewhere.
