I promised you horses - horses you shall have

For the first half of Easter we were attending an equestrian endurance ride at Collie in Western Australia. I’ve mentioned this a few times but now some are getting a bit anxious to see a photo of a horse. I like leaving you all in suspense sometimes! The reason for the delay in providing a horse photo is that I didn’t take any this time so I have to wait for Vince to process them. Vince shoots them (photographically speaking) in something called ‘raw’ which means each photo can be anything up to 19 megabytes. Raw allows him to do a lot of editing. Horses and riders that were lost in shadows on the road can miraculously be made to appear out of the darkness and using the ‘haze’ button removes any background fuzz which may be spoiling the photo. Then the skin tones can be improved, the photo cropped and so on. Once all that is done, it needs a watermark and number put on it. He reduces it to about 3kg then puts it up on the endurance riding Facebook site. After all this, if I’ve brought him enough cups of coffee, he emails the ones I’d like to be. I used to have access to his photo files but Windows 10 in its wisdom has done an update and for the moment I’ve lost that option. Here you see three riders enjoying their ride. They are all Arabs (the horses not the riders) which are the preferred breed if you want to be competitive in the sport. The stirrups of the first rider are designed so that the feet can’t slip through should the rider be thrown from the horse. There have been many nasty accidents where a person’s foot has slid right through the stirrup and they’ve been dragged. Several of the horses also have protective foot- and leg-wear. One thing with being stuck out in the bush is that the horses were all surprised to see us and so most of the photos show the horses with their ears nicely pricked.

Interesting stirrup modification, good thinking whoever designed that!

Those who are looking to win go most of the way at a hand gallop or fast trot and falls of horse and/or rider aren't uncommon as sometimes the ground can be pretty rough so anything that increases the safety is a good idea.

@pgntwo The motto is 'to complete is to win' but none of them actually believe it.

I think we've managed to get photos of just about every rider. Of course, some photos are much better than others.

I love it here! It's much more interesting than my home - as in housework, etc.

A very rough guesstimate is that most average around 10kph but some go quite a bit faster if their horse is fit and conditions are good.

We sat where they could see us from quite a distance. We didn't want to cause any accidents but suddenly coming across people in the bush did mean that the horses had their ears pricked nicely. .

I thought that only two of the horses were Arab horses, they are my favorite. Windows 10 makes all the time a mess with the updates.

Fantastic photo. The quality of it is so crisp. Although my camera has the Raw setting it confused me so I never used it. I love he the horses have their ears perked right u and the big happy smile on the first riders face. I spot two of the neat grass trees in this photo that you wrote about in your post a few days ago.

They do a lot of riding while they're training and their clothing is all designed to keep from rubbing but many are very tired and stiff at the end of their day.

The horses look a bit famished to me. I don't want to ride any animal. They are not born naturally to do that. Out here, they use elephants, and they are very cruel to them. Before I learned of the cruelty towards animals, I used to think riding horse is elegant. As to you being kept out by Windows 10...what have you been up to Judy? Or rather what has Vince been up to...Evil Grin.

@JudyEv Somehow, the thought of elephants being poked with sharp objects to make them do what is expected of them felt cruel. Extremely cruel. And denying them food. And making them walk on tar/bitumen road ..we wear footwear ..they have to endure the heat. Now, I am not great one to contribute to their cause but the least I can do is, not encourage such things.
The festival season for humans is a season of torture for elephants in Kerala. The cultural celebrations have barely begun in that Southern state of India, and five elephants have already run amok in...

When I get around to it (which means when Vince remembers to email me the photos) I'm going to put up two photos side by side - one under-exposed to billyo and the other brought 'into the light' by editing.
