One of my very few antiques - a chaise-lounge

We’ve had a major overhaul of our bedroom ready for new Ikea wardrobes which are now three days overdue. But that’s okay. One of the items against one wall in our bedroom is this ‘chaise lounge’. It is at least 100 years old and came to me from my mother.
At one stage we lent it to my sister-in-law who decided to recover it. She went to night school and it is now a lovely green velvet. It sat in her lounge on the far side away from an open fire but a spark from the fire managed to land on the seat and burnt a small hole in the fabric. And now it is back with us. I was thinking of selling it but now I think I’ll keep it a bit longer. Eventually I might give it to a nephew if he’d like it.
Although it might look nice it isn’t especially comfortable. Mostly it is covered in clothes we currently using.

I do love the odd antique as it really adds character to a room. I would keep it for awhile- although I had a small antique couch once and although I loved it, no one could sit on it! It was so uncomfortable I did sell it. Fun to imagine how everyone sat on these pieces years ago- they probably didn't! ha!

@MarymargII Then sit opposite and smile and watch them wriggle and squirm as they try to get comfortable. I like it!

You should have it appraised to get an idea of value.

@JohnRoberts Do you mean the recover that has already been done? The original cover was leather but it was torn so it wasn't an option to leave it in its original condition. I'm not that fussed about keeping it so if I can find it a home within the extended family I'd be happy with that.

@JudyEv The recover diminished its antique value.

If it's that old it would be worth a bit now and it looks in very good condition. Makes me want to have a little lie down!

@JudyEv I can't see a burn hole. It must be quite small.

@JudyEv If you wanted to sell it you could probably get it repaired professionally but it might still lose value.

Its very pretty, I love that old furniture. We have a Goodwill here and I love going in there to look at the furniture, they put it in one day and it is gone the next. I have never seen so much antique furniture in one place all the time. I told my husband that it must be all the older people who donate it when they pass. If I were you, I would hang on to it a little longer.

Vince went to woodwork classes at night and made two lovely bookcases. They quite simple but with adjustable shelves and we're still using them. That was probably 40 years ago. And I taught crochet at night school for a couple of seasons. They paid really good money at the time.

It's neoclassic, isn't it? I quite like it, but it doesn't look very comfortable...

how long is it? it seems if you want to lie on it, say to read, you'd need a pillow, then if you get sleepy, turn sideways with your knees bent.

That is a very lovely shade of green, and a very lovely design, although I can see what you mean when you say it isn't very comfortable. But it sure makes a great decorative piece (or in your case, storage for clothing). By the way, I love that your wood flooring is angled in relation to the wall, instead of parallel or perpendicular to it. Nice touch!

Thanks. Actually the lounge is a strange shape so it's really the walls that are angled rather than the flooring. I might do a post and put up a photo of the floor plan. The house suits us but there are many areas where a family could get away from each other.

No matter if it is comfortable, it is something you can hopefully care for enough to pass on to the next generation. I can't say there are any family heirlooms such as this in our family. But I kind of wish there was. Maybe I'll pass on my old office chair. lol
