I've been away getting my 'goat-fix'

I’ve been away most of today. We took the chance to catch up with my sister before we go away. We drove an hour towards Perth in Western Australia to the Harvey Agricultural Show. My sister was there with her son and they were exhibiting stud Saanen goats. We spent most of our time watching the goats and I was even able to lead one in a class as they were short of handlers. I did take some photos of the cattle-judging and the wood-chop event which was next door. Perhaps I’ll write about them later. Vince took this photo of me with ‘my’ goat. She kept putting her face up to mine. Maybe I had goat’s breath too!

They do extremely well with their Saanens and are now branching out into dwarf Nigerians. One year goats with their stud name or of their breeding won Supreme Champion Goat at the National Shows in all states bar two. They also held the world record for milk production but that might have been broken now. My nephew now judges interstate quite often too.

@jaboUK My sister started it all with mohair goats then switched to Saanens. The nephew has pretty much taken over now as my sister will soon be 80 but it is all due to her efforts really. I am very proud of what she has achieved. She is one of those quiet unsung hero people.

@mlgen1037 My nephew spends a lot of time making them look good. His goats all have their hair clipped a bit short then they are washed to make them nice and white.

Great pic of you and the goat! You look young and the goat looks happy. However, he/she looks more like a sheep. Do only male goats have horns?

@JudyEv I see! My friend nursed a sheep from a baby..but it got a bit rambunctious as it got older and wanted to butt everybody..they ended up giving it to a petting zoo. I hope it wasn't butting the children lol..

@snowy22315 In a way they all have to be taught what is acceptable and non-acceptable behaviour - just like dogs really. Entire males need to be castrated or they mostly cause problems and when young goats/sheep/calves should never be teased as once they are older what was a game can become quite dangerous.

The kids are 'debudded' at birth so mostly none of the stud goats have horns now. It saves a lot of injuries.

Great photo and I like goats but never had any but the guy over here next to the Greenhouse had quite a few of them and they used to be fun to watch. However I did not want to get attached to them as they often ended up on someone´s Dinner Table and that was sad for me.

@JudyEv I only ever eat the goats milk what they make it into is called cuajada here and you eat it with honey well just a little bit of honey as the real cuajada is quite strong.

She won second here for a progeny class (mother and daughter) and also take a place in the milking doe class. That might have been all. My sister and nephew took ten goats to the show and at least four were all very similar looking to me. The next five were all alike but younger and thus a bit smaller then there was a black dwarf goat.

I am not sure what you mean. At the show the goats are exhibited in 'classes' - best milking goat, best 'dry' goat (not milking) etc. If you have the best goat, then you get a ribbon - blue for first and red for second.

They did really well and had a heap of ribbons at the finish. It is a small industry I guess in WA but they are at the top of the ladder. My nephew regularly judges goat classes interstate. A few years ago one of their breeding held the world record for milk production but that might have been surpassed by now.
