Ours didn’t have a phone in it, just a bunk bed and one of those all-in-one toilets. With no privacy. I was shocked when I came in to work one morning and there was someone in the cell! (Dang drunk sailor.)

I had one when I was detained for a night for not having the required entry pass in a bordering state of my own country. I did not know the rule and it was 7 PM when I was withheld. I used that cell phone kept in office of the (you know who I am talking about) to inform my dealer. By the way they took my real cellphone.

@JolietJake I understand, probably they open them only after the counting process is done in the morning

I've had to use them several times...many places shut them off at 10 at night until 6 in the morning

You are lucky your cells had phones way back in 1975, if I remember right, police officers had a desk landline where you are only allowed to call your attorney or your parents

I remember in '77 calling the radio station to request a song while in jail

(As opposed to a fake cell phone?)
You had a cell phone in 1975? "Money, money, money, Moneyyyyyyyy!"
My first cell phone was in 1997, when they became affordable for the middle class.

@JolietJake how many calls were you allowed, and how many minutes each?

@hereandthere That depends on the jail's rules. Also, you take into consideration if anyone else needs to use it.

The picture looks like a phone (calling phone)! Can we used that to make a text or send SMS? Has it similar features to our latest cellphone?

They were mounted on the wall of the jail cell usually.

I am happy to say that I have never had a real cell phone and I hope it stays that way.
