Like father, like son

We’ve been staying in Melbourne, Australia for the past nine days and visiting our son almost every one of the those days. Our other son in Ireland has rung several times and we’ve been able to put his call on ‘speaker’ so we’ve all been able to chat to him. He is a professional jazz player and plays double bass. Much of his work comes from weddings and corporate functions and he now has a Masters Degree in Jazz Studies. However it seems he is very much like his father. Some of you may remember we got lost on our way to Melbourne and had to get the SES to cut down a tree that was blocking our path. You can catch up here if you want to: http://www.mylot.com/post/3183294/rescued-by-the-state-emergency-service-ses. Damian travelled to a wedding gig a few weeks back and discovered he’d forgotten his double bass. To make it worse he’d stopped for petrol and a snack and had been peering in his rearview mirror but hadn’t noticed the big empty space where the bass should have been. He had to drive 30 minutes to a nearby town and hire an electric bass for the evening. Like father, like son, don’t you think? And you’ve seen the photo before but it’s pretty cute. At least this mother thinks so.

Good that he was able to hire one and didn't have to miss playing at the wedding.

His name would have really been mud if he hadn't been able to play.

@LadyDuck Neither Vince's nor my parents played an instrument but they never had the chance to learn either. All Vince's brothers and sisters are very musical and I'm sure their parents would have been too even though it was never seen in them.

Thanks. He has certainly inherited Vince's musical ability. Although I learnt and taught piano, Vince is much more musical than I am.

@JudyEv Well, hopefully that was a lesson learned in making sure to check to see if you have your equipment before setting out on the road!

@moffittjc I'm always telling him it's a pity he didn't choose a flute as his instrument as they are much easier to cart around.

That's so true! And he got back to the gig before the bride arrived so all was good. Of course, it meant his pay for the night was sadly depleted.

I can feel the motherhood. He does look like a cute boy and now, a grown-up man. It is also a good thing that he had solved his dilemma right away.

It's a very cute photo of him! Pretty funny that he never missed his bass while looking in the rear view. I can relate to that story a little bit. I had some blazer type jackets i needed to take with me to a set for a film in Portland a while back. About 20 miles away from home, I realized that I had left them at home and had to turn around and come back for them. It was a good thing I left early.

Being a professional musician must be a lot of fun. But yeah, you have to have your instrument to get the job done. You'd think that would be the first thing to be packed. lol

I can imagine him being absolutely stunned when he realised he didn't have it! To fit it in his car, he has to put the back seat down and angle it in etc. It's not the easiest thing to transport. I bet he doesn't forget it again in a hurry.

Most people around here are brunettes and some try to bleach it blonde which doesn't work all that well @JudyEv They call me a blonde but my hair is actually light brown. It's been years since I've seen a natural red head but there are a lot of old ladies who have colored their hair red, hmmm, maybe I should try that too

I just scrolled back up to look at his hair! We wouldn't have called him a 'red head'. It's more mousey although Vince's beard used to be quite reddish.
