Salmonella and pre cut fruit

There is a new epidemic of salmonella poisoning in the United States. It is being caused by pre cut pre packed fruits in a variety of stores. The announcement I saw listed the stores that have been associated with it and I have the link for you here. The prepackaged fruit is a wonderful convenience but it sounds as if it could be sickening as well. Only two stores in Kansas are associated, so far. They are near Kansas City, and are Costco Club stores. The PDF file has the states listed alphabetically and only one store per page, or more pages. It is very easy to scroll through and look for your state.

I cannot understand why people do not spend a little time cutting their own veggies and fruits. I would never buy pre-cut fruits.

I have on very rare occasions. Mostly it is just easy to get things done at home.

@LadyDuck You should be reasonably safe then as long as the growing fields do not have a contamination. We had that problem here for a while with lettuce.

@GardenGerty I am pretty maniac about hygiene, I never buy fruits that I cannot wash myself before cutting using a clean knife.

Until the problem with romaine lettuce being contaminated cropped up I thought of food poisoning being in eggs and cream and meat, not fruits and veggies.

Salmonella bacteria are found in faecal material...that means there was lack of hygiene in those stores where fruits were cut for the sale? What is the source of origin? Thanks!

I wondered if the contamination was from contaminated water (from feces) used to wash the fruit or the cutting tools.

Even when trying to eat healthy we sometimes end up at risk.

I think maybe it is the cutting tools. It means the hygiene there of the store is not good.

This would be from a processing facility but yes, I did wonder about the things they use to cut with.

I've never bought pre-cut fruit. I hope the folks who are getting sick will be okay.

I do not buy pre cut fruit. I feel pretty safe, but I was wondering about uncut fruit. Guess it is less processed and so it is not a problem.

It is fresher and more economical, for sure.
