Well, with Summer well under way we all know liberal use of sun tan lotion is one powerful method to protect against skin cancer. It goes without saying sun plus skin equals danger if precautions are not taken.
The good news is that the earlier you catch and treat it, the more likely your dermatologist can cure cancer. So, lets take a look at some of the risk factors, to make sure your aware just what can increase you cancer risk.
According to this article by Marie Claire here are a few you may not be aware of:
-Getting many X-ray treatments.
-Having an immune-weakening disease such as Lymphoma and HIV.
-Smoking cigarettes.
-Bad burns or scars that have been exposed to UV rays.
-Also there are the more obvious ones like a family history of skin cancer or having red or blonde hair and fair skin.
But just knowing the risk factors is not enough in skin cancer prevention. One must look for suspicious signs too.
Here are a few which should be taken seriously:
-Moles with jagged or irregular edges.
-Bruises on your feet that won't heal.
-Moles that bleed or hurt.
- Brown or black streaks under your fingernails or toes.
- Pimples that won't go away on sun-exposed skin.
-Moles that grow in size.
After reading this article there were definitely a couple here I was not aware of as pre-cancer signs. Did you know all of these warning signs of skin cancer?
In closing, make sure you pay attention to any skin changes and include a hat, sun glasses, and SPF lotion as part of your summer wardrobe. It will make your fun in the sun much safer.
Hope you found this post informative.....

They should implement a free skin cancer program in the states. I did notice your country and New Zealand have the highest rates of cancer worldwide. Your close proximity to Antarctica where there is a hole in the ozone layer allows for more UV rays to be higher since they cannot be filtered out. Like many at the beaches in the U.S., tanning and sun worshipping has been a big part of your culture too.

The main thing is Sun Screen is good, but are people using the right type to protect their skin? The ones with the highest UV protection are always the Best.

For me I go with SPF-50. I provides longer protection in the sun time wise than #30 which is the minimum recommended. This way I do not have to worry about forgetting to reapply. I usually have had enough sun by then, lol.

As Michele stated at least you are informed and can take the necessary precautions. The truth can be scary, especially with disease.

Yes, I read that too Anna! Much has been mentioned over the years about the dangers of tanning salons. I wonder if it has had an effect on people's behavior?
