Salt. What's it worth?

Salt is something most of us take for granted. We buy a box of it at Walmart and don't give it another thought. It's probably not as plentiful in some countries as it is in the USA, although it's been used for centuries to preserve food and was very valuable. I learned what a big difference salt makes when I tried reduced sodium V8 juice. I love V8, but apparently what gives it such a great taste is all that sodium! Without it, it was horrible. It's amazing how much better something can taste with a little salt. I'm trying to cut back because of those dreaded kidney stones. Some people have to reduce their sodium intake because of high blood pressure and other medical conditions. But I got to thinking about what the Bible says about salt. In Matthew 5:13, Jesus told his disciples, "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men." Yea, I guess salt that isn't salty can't be much good. I want my life to be the salt of the earth. I want to be a seasoning that produces the love of Christ to the world and adds flavor to a sin-weary world. Like me, do you have to limit salt for health reasons? Maybe so, but we can still be "the salt of the earth."

No, I do not have to limit salt and also my husband does not have salt limits. I try never to abuse, but I add the little salt needed to give the right taste to food.

@1creekgirl I agree, when there is no salt at all, the food seems not to have taste.

You're both very blessed not to have to limit your salt. It really does make a difference in food.

I've needed to go the 'no salt' route. Now, when I eat anything with salt in it, I can tell the difference immediately. It's like eating a box of salt and nothing else. My goal is also to be the salt of the earth. Here's to being salty and flavorful!

@1creekgirl Cheers I've got a song going through my mind and wanted to share it, unfortunately, I don't know the title and the different phrases also are in several other songs. When I hear it, I'll try to remember to share it. In the meantime, be salty and flavorful so the whole world will enjoy your seasoning.

I didn't think that salt had anything to do with kidney stones. I remember reading that people needed to cut back on things like soda if they had a history of them. I have hypertension but I don't limit my salt. It is too important in giving food flavor. . . plus I take medication for it.

@1creekgirl The tea makes sense. The salt doesn't. I had kidney stones back in college. I never felt them pass though. I was one of the lucky ones.

So far, I am allowed the optimal consumption of salt. I add salt to taste.

@1creekgirl yeah.. Too much of it is not healthy. It can increase blood pressure and sodium level in the body which can be dangerous

I am not on any salt limits, but I do not use a lot of it. It is great that we can go a long way towards adding season to our world by being salt.

You're wise to get used to not using a lot of salt. Glad that you are salt, though!

I should, but I really don't. I have to admit I am a salt freak, and usually prefer it over sweet.

I'm slowly getting used to a little less. I sure don't want these kidney stones to get larger. But sweets are my downfall, when I let it happen!

Seasoning and using salt has to be done right, either too much or too little can be unpleasant. (Colossians 4:6)

That's true for the food we eat and also for our lives as we try to be "full of grace."

I don't need to limit salt in my diet. But I won't eat anything too salty. That is unhealthy.

When I was expecting our first child I began to become very health conscious when it came to my foods that I ate. And I actually cut out the salt shaker all together-30 years ago almost. And then before our son was born, I got toxemia, so they hospitalized me and put me on a low salt diet. But I had one over on them because I hadn't been using the salt shaker, but there are a lot of other ways to cut back on salt. After that hospital stay I have been eating reduced salt bacon, and in my late 40's I would develop bad migraines if I ate ham, so I figured it was the salt content raising my blood pressure and causing the migraines, so I stopped eating that. And it just continues. But......not all is perfectly healthy, I do love feta cheese. And its awfully salty, in fact we just had supper out and there was feta on our appetizers. But we all need a little salt, our bodies have to have it.

I think you were wise to cut down on the salt. Our grandson had migraines when he was younger and through changing several things, either God healed him or he out grew them.

At one time in history, salt was used a currency and workers would be paid in salt. This is where the expression that a man was or wasn't worth his salt came from. A portion of Roman soldiers' salaries were used to purchase salt. The latin word for salt is sal, and is the root of the word salary.
The meaning and origin of the phrase 'Worth one's salt'.

For people with low blood pressure, use a lot of good salt but it will be against you.
