Harvesting

My home smells lovely. I just harvested a large amount of cinnamon basil. I will make a different type of pesto this time. It is good for the plants for me to trim off the blooming parts. The plant will get bushy and even more full. I may try to root some cuttings in water as some basils do root readily. In other news the birds are delighted I refilled the bird bath. It is a lovely quiet morning. I believe it is finches enjoying the water right now. I may be able to get hubby off the property today, he is feeling much much better. We have been trying to go out and have a cup of coffee outside first thing in the morning. Morning sunlight is supposed to help set your body clock for good evening sleep.

I never heard of cinnamon basil. Is it different than regular basil? I also didn't know about morning sunlight and your body clock. I learned a lot here this morning

Yes, cinnamon basil has a more cinnamon flavor, to me it resembles the Thai basil a bit. I am not sure but I believe there are hundreds of Basil cultivars.

I didn't know that about morning sunlight. Maybe I should try that.

It is supposed to set you up to produce melatonin in the evening. It is just what so many sleep advice columns say. It does not hurt to try.

I have not tried the cinnamon basil yet but I love cinnamon. I bet it does make your house smell wonderful. Aside from pesto what will you use it in? I am glad your hubby is feeling better. I did not know about the morning sunlight. I think I will try that, it might not be as harsh on my facial skin.

You can add basil to herbal teas and serve them hot or iced. I chop it in salads and a leaf or two in an omelette or a quiche is very good. Just like spinach. It is good in pasta dishes as well.

@GardenGerty Have you tried the cinnamon basil in pasta yet? I would like to hear how you used it and how it tastes.

Cinnamon basil is new to me. If you lived nearer to me I'd give you some chocolate mint leaves in hope of a sample of cinnamon basil as an exchange.

Wish you could smell it. I would love to have some chocolate mint. It is on the list for next year. Maybe.

@sallypup I just let my mints invade if they will I have peppermint that carried over from last year. The spearmint did not survive so I bought more.i also bought something they called sweet mint that is similar to spearmint. Do you have lemon balm? Of course basil, lemon balm and mint are all cousins.

@GardenGerty That's very pretty. Once chocolate mint gets going it grows like a weed. I love how it invades cause its not another painful thorny weed. Its sporting light lavender barrel shaped blooms right now.

I have never heard of either, but I do get morning sunlight daily and it hasn't helped me with my sleeping the last 3 nights.

Never heard of cinnamon basil or just getting morning sun to help you produce melatonin at night to sleep?

Except for the tomatoes which aren't ready yet our garden is done for the year. Francine let the lettuce and the herbs go to seed in hopes of collecting some of those. Sounds like you are having good success this year.

I got my tomatoes in late. I hope a few ripen before fall springs itself on us. I just have had good luck with herbs.

@GardenGerty Fingers crossed. We will be covering them whenever there is a risk of frost. Hopefully, we can end up with a big harvest.

Oh it's nice to go out with the coffee when the weather's nice in the morning. I don't think I know what cinnamon basil smells like. Is it actually a cinnamon aroma? I'd love that. I've had cinnamon diffuser in the past. I don't use scent in my room now since I have birds in here. They're really sensitive to scents. I refilled our bird bath yesterday and took some seed out to both front and back, also refilled the dishpan of water we keep for critters out back. The crows take baths in it when it's hot. They can sure get to splashing, too, they're so big!

I bet you could just have fragrant herbs and it would not hurt the birds. It is a light cinnamon smell. I had answered several responses and crashed my tab. I think I included an image for you. The blooms are purple spikes and I need to get them off so the plant continues to grow.
