Does Florence Really Sound Like a Machine of Destruction?

We are another day closer to the arrival of Hurricane Florence here on the Carolina/Virginia coast. My missus and I have done all we can to prepare. We have stored up water and ice. We have plenty of non-perishable food. The propane tanks on the camper are full if we lose power for a while and need to use the fridge and freezer in the camper. We can also cook out there. A colleague and I were talking about the onrushing storm today and thought how ironic it was that a storm sharing the real name of Mrs. Carol Brady from the TV show could pose such a threat. Florence does not seem like the name of a twisting heaving natural implement of awesome destruction. Yet, here she comes. For all of you in her path with us, stay safe, avoid flooded areas, and evacuate if suggested. I'll keep posting updates as long as power and connectivity allow. The girl on the dock in the photo is contemplating the calm before the storm. Actually, this was a photo I was considering for a book cover. Didn't use it, but kept the photo as I liked the feeling it evokes.

I love your photo. I looked up where Pikeville is, you're no so awfully far from us. We're about an hour away from Greenville. We're hopefully prepared and not planning to evacuate if possible, except maybe going to our neighbor's house which is on a little of a hill. Praying you all will be safe through this, too.

Praying for you, too. At least it looks like, wind wise, we're not going to get hit as hard, but the forecast is still calling for an awfully lot of rain.

@1creekgirl The latest predicted track has me very concerned about the rain fall amounts. I know we'll see rain for days. I imagine you, like us, are already feeling the breeze.

@DWDavis Yeah, it seems like maybe the winds won't be so bad, but the flooding might get bad.

Why aren't you evacuating? It seems like the storm is going to go to the SouthWest so we probably won't feel too many effects from it. I hope you and the missus are safe.

We're not in a flood zone and should be able to endure in place. We've weathered several hurricanes in this house.

I have looked at the photos of the hurricane this morning and it appears to be huge, really scary. You are prepared, stay in a safe place, there is not a lot else that you can do.

We are ready to wait out the storm. We've supplies enough for at least a week without power and water service. It won't be comfortable, but it won't be the first time we've had to rough it.

@LadyDuck The news improved again overnight. She is now a Cat 2. She's slowing down but also spreading out. Less wind but more rain.

@DWDavis I have read a few minutes ago that Florence has been downgraded to Category 3, this is at least good news.

You obviously never saw Florence in her non-Brady cabaret act where she played a sadistic S&M Mistress---very funny. In any case NEVER underrate a hurricane--aside from the winds that cause a lot of destruction it seems you will be getting a lot of rain! Stay safe!

I've been through enough hurricanes and tropical storms to know better than to underestimate what they can do. We've done all we can to prepare for the storm and the aftermath.

@GreatMartin Those weather reporters must be adrenaline junkies. Other than entertainment and ratings, there's no good reason for them to be out there in the storm.

@DWDavis And the newscasters are acting if no one else in the world, except Florida, has ever had a hurricane hit! And, of course, shots are coming in from the deserted South Carolina's beach of a stupid newscaster in the winds and rains being blown around--I hope he is getting paid enough.

Stay safe and you and everyone in the path of Florence. I agree that Florence from the Brady Bunch was a force to be reckoned with but not destructive at all.

Overnight, the forecast for Florence changed and she is supposed to turn south and make landfall in SC instead of NC. We will still get plenty of wind and rain. Our area is under a Tropical Storm Warning and a Flash Flood Watch now.

@Namelesss We'll take any improvement we can get. My real worry is the amount of rain.

We backed the camper up next to the garage and hope it will weather the storm okay. I also filled the fresh water tank, so it has about 350 lbs of extra ballast to help keep it on the ground.

Until you've lived through a storm like a hurricane or typhoon, it is hard to believe what they are really going to be like.

The crazy way Florence keep changing direction, and her size, means there are a lot of us in her path and the strength of what we'll face keeps changing.

@DWDavis It is sad that that is the name of the hurricane. Hurricanes like others before it and other things dangerous are horrible.

I have a feeling this thing is going to be more hype than destruction. One thing is known and that with all of our technology, we still can't predict a hurricane. We shall see. Meantime, everyone be safe!

The waiting does make it weigh more heavily on our minds. I do not think weather as entertainment, which our Weather Channel has become, is such a good thing.

The forecast was showing Florence trending further south but the latest pulled it back north a bit. We know we're in for some rain and wind. It's just a matter of how much.

I have been making a note of hurricane names for some years now - and when I heard Florence it sounded like destruction to me. Flora was another destructive one many years ago. In fact findings show that hurricanes with female names have been more destructive - Katrina and Irma to mention a couple. So, do you think it is wise to remain where you are, or move further inland?.

I just read an update that Florence could quickly become a category 5 hurricane before making landfall. Don't take this storm lightly. She sounds like another Katrina. Get to high ground if you are not there already. Flooding is expected to reach a depth of over a metre. (3.37 ft) Stay safe.

We are well away from the ocean and the nearest river, and on relatively high ground. Now that their predicting less wind in our area, Tropical Storm Force instead of Hurricane Force, rain will be our biggest worry.
