Just after I posted the update about my husband’s trip to Nepal, he posted some more photos on Facebook including this one of himself near a rhino. A day or two ago, the small group had gone on a safari on elephants to look for rhinos but had only caught a quick glimpse of one.
Little did they know that there was one in the vicinity of their accommodation. They were told it was a three-year-old who mother had died a year ago in the big floods. The calf had washed downstream into India and was later retrieved and brought back to Chitwan. He is used to people and mainly ignores them but can be dangerous if excited or hassled.
Vince said he came onto the road to graze until soldiers hunted him off. He wandered down another track and finally stopped outside the Rhino Residency Resort. Maybe he wanted a room for the night.
I had no idea there were rhinos in Nepal. Did you?

I would have never guessed that there were rhinos in Nepal. Are they naturally occurring there, or were they brought there?

To tell you the truth Judy I do not know much about Nepal so cannot say either way. Nice picture of Vince and I see how close he is to the rhino. Poor rhino. Is the rhino then all alone or does he or she have other family? I love his hat too.

Oh wow that is a great experience to have being close up with a rhino that is not very aggressive with people. I think the wild ones would either flee or would attack if they feel threatened by a person's presence. I hope that he would grow to his old age being in the care of humans around the area.

@JudyEv Yeah or much better if he would be move to his home in the forest to live a normal rhino life. I think putting him in zoo is like putting him on prison. But if he gets too tamed to be released in wildlife then I guess he should be placed in safe distance to where he could endanger life or property because he will get stronger and bigger in size that he may not be suitable near human settlements.

in indonesia, we have 2 rhinos, sumatran rhnos, which have 2 horn, and javanese rhino, which have only one horn, and it is the only in world. unfortunately, the numbers of rhinos in indonesia is shrinking fast. for one horn rhino, now it is concentrated in the ujung kulon reservations, western part of java island. the population is only around sixty's in wild. hopefully our next generations can see them in the wild, not in the book or internet.
most of them killed by hunters for the horn only, the issue, rhinos horn can be used for chinese medication , but i have never read official research on it.

@DWDavis @franxav said in his comment that Jaldapara in Bengal and Kajiranga in Assam (India) have rhinos and Kajiranga has double-horned rhinos. And there are rhinos in Java and Sumatra. These are separate and different species and at risk. The Sumatran is known as the hairy rhinoceros or Asian two-horned rhinoceros. So there you have it.

I had no ideas there were rhinos in Florida! We went to a Safari park with our son and grandson. The rhinos came right up to our car. One was not very happy having his photo taken through the skylight in the car's roof. He let us know by snorting and stamping his feet. We drove away quickly. Vince was lucky. Rhinos could be very dangerous. And no, I didn't know they were in Nepal. Actually, I never gave it a thought until now.

No, I did not know that. He looks to be on the thin side.

A rhino is a real monster.I have known that the rhinos native to Africa are different from ones native to Southern Asia.Vince is a brave person,I would give the young rhino a wide berth.
