We all get urges or cravings at times. How do you fight them? Is there any particular urge or craving which is a constant battle? Do you just use willpower to fight it till it passes? Do you just decide that you will not act on that urge as it not good for you? Does that work for you or do you have another way to suppress them?

I love chocolate but rarely buy it. If it isn't in the house I can't eat it.

@1hopefulman I will put chocolate in my freezer, hidden behind something, and then I forget it.

I don't buy chocolate unless some kids come to my door. I don't have the heart to say no and I can't let it go to waste as that would be a sin.

Wouldn't you know, in the suggested posts that show up on the right side, next to your post are several foods that make me crave everyone of them! I have no advice as I have no willpower.

@jstory07 sometimes your approach is best. If you try to avoid it and substitute something else, you will over eat and still end up getting it in the end.

Maybe you have to use the same tactics on yourself that you would apply to your child or your dog. In other words, use a distraction technique that concentrates your mind on something other than the urge or craving.

Do you find that you can distract yourself so that you forget about it or do you have to constantly try to distract yourself?

If you are talking about food, I just don't keep junk food in the house and don't miss it at all. If it comes to shopping, I don't suppress myself at all.

You are good with the junk food! Does your husband ever want any? So you have no self-control when it comes to shopping?

If we eat less sugar, we get used to not grave sweets. Instead we can eat good fats - they are necessary for our cell membranes as they help to let in the vitamins and minerals in our food into our cells. We get right nutrition, and we don“t want more food.

@1hopefulman It was interesting to learn - a long time ago, that half of our brain consists of fats! But it needs good fats of course..

I like sweets, especially dark chocolate. I know that I like to have a piece every evening when I watch the TV. I am very strict with myself, no chocolate during the day.

Yes, there are times when the cravings are stronger and if we don't have any sweets or salty stuff around then we have to eat something healthier. I have a nice bunch of grapes that I ill snack on in a little while.

I don't know what it is. I got it from Pixabay where they have free pictures we can use. If you are trying to give up sweets then there are a lot of good suggestions on how to suppress cravings. Sugar is bad for us so let's avoid it. I was invited to a restaurant by my friend where there would be temptations of many unhealthy foods and I told him why I could not go. He understood and so we did something else where we just talked about some challenges he was dealing with. We did not need bad food in order to have a good talk.

It all depends on what I'm craving, if it is something sweet and I don't have anything, I will eat something salty.

I guess out of sight out of mind. If it's not in my cupboard or refrigerator I'm not tempted to eat it. But if it is I try to limit the amount I consume. Willpower alone can be a fight in itself, lol.

Yes, I agree about not having something available where we might give in because our willpower is not as strong as we would like it to be. I try to buy and only bring hope what is a healthy choice.

@1hopefulman In winter I have a harder time to not want something but lately I can look at food and not want it. I am trying very hard to eat so much and not want it. In the summer it is easy because all I want to do is drink and not eat much at all. I guess a lot of will power and saying I do not need it but it is still hard,. I have to say enough is enough. I hate being fat.

It is true with me too that in the winter I crave some comforting junk food more than the summer. In the summer there's a lot of fruit and I'm happy eating that instead of sweets.
