Bad Timing for a toothache! Home remedies?

Eugene, Oregon

I had an annual dental checkup just over a week ago, x-rays included, nothing showing any problems apparently. Then, about mid-week, I felt a little twinge on the lower right side of my jaw. Told myself it would go away, but it did not. It grew a bit more "twingey" on Friday, so I called my dentist. They are closed on Friday. I left a message and hope they are not closed all next week due to Thanksgiving. Of course, it is worse today, so I finally took some Extra Strength Tylenol and it is working. Biting down on it brings on a pretty sharp pain, so I will chew carefully on the left side We are going to my daughter's house on Thursday for Thanksgiving. I may have to look for emergency treatment if I don't hear from my dentist Monday morning. Any good home remedies out there?

Sometimes an aspirin pressed against the tooth helps and sometimes swishing with hot salty water helps. I hope your dentist can fit you in Monday.

@RubyHawk - The aspirin is the same remedy I gave him. We think alike!

Salt water rinses, cold compress, and Orajel. Good luck. Been there too many times.

@CarolDM I thought that is comparative system. I mean, if you aggravate the pain some more, you naturally feel better after some time and the relief is psychological.

This is one of the reason why I dislike seeing my dentist, they poke around and they trigger problems. Clove Oil rubbed on the area usually works. Bring with you Ibuprofen, may be the problem will go away.

@jameshxstatic That's the worst. Sometimes the dentist poking about your teeth can trigger a problem that was waiting to surface. I used to be plagued by dental abscesses (might not be what you have) and my emergency remedies included listening to opera on headphones, turned right up, vibrations to the side of the head, lying on my bed on my back with my head hanging on the floor, walking and injuring other parts of my body to distract myself.

Sounds extreme, maybe tomorrow. Thanks! I had an uncle who I was driving to work once. As he had a bad toothache, we stopped at a liquor store and he bought gin to hold in his mouth on the affected side. I wonder if Jamesons would work?

I've heard that swishing whiskey in your mouth may help, Ambesol, clove oil, and cloves, but I do hope you are able to see your dentist tomorrow. Dental pain is just awful. Feel better soon.

Thanks Dianne, I did all of the above today and then took a Naproxen pill that really has helped since about 2 PM. I will take another before I go to bed in a few minutes.

It certainly stinks that you have a toothache just as the weekend rolls around. Hope the pain subsides and you get to your dentist before Thanksgiving

If mine act up I use some Listerine or another mouth wash and let it sit on the spot that hurts for a few minutes to soak it, it seems to help it
