Do you store nuts for the winter?

Acorns in our car by Pat Z Anthony

If winter is on the way where you live, have you stored extra food for the winter like squirrels do acorns and other nuts for the season? Something, maybe a squirrel, stored these acorns in one of our cars a year or two ago and we thought it was funny at the time. While the acorns should not be there, the car was still running when we found the stash in the car. Like many here, we do prepare for the cold weather by having extra items stored for the winter. Not one of us in our household wants to venture out in the snow of freezing weather if we don't have to do that!

Thats funny seeing all those nuts in there, thats a lot. I usually keep all the staples for meals in the kitchen, we don't get snow here but if an ice storm comes through the entire town closes down and no one goes out.

It is good to stay home if the roads are bad. Too many take chances.

@PatZAnthony Here I have found that the roads are different than in CO, I don't know what they are made from but you slide a lot more and when it gets icy, no one knows how to drive here in it.

@cintol That is not good. We stay off the roads as much as we can during this weather.

I have food in the freezers, potatoes, flour, pasta and rice in the pantry. I buy bags of nuts, I always keep a few, I like walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts.

It is great to be able to store extra food because we really have no idea what could happen. Especially with the seasonal changes, it is good to store food if we can.

@LadyDuck It is always nice to be prepared and most know that shopping too often causes us to spend more than we should.

@PatZAnthony I prefer to have enough food in the house to be able to avoid grocery shopping for at least 10 days. If a snow storms blocks us inside, we will not die of starvation.

We have to be sure certain things are here if it storms. No way to go out during a storm for those few things you forgot to get.

I store nuts for the winter in my cheeks. Not trying to be cheeky or anything. We usually do buy extra but I've realized recently we're behind eating our stash so I've been working on preparing things before they expire. I'm also not working at present and before when I was, I was out and about anyway so getting the needed food wasn't a choice as much as it will be this winter. Once we get more gone I may need to up our stash again but maybe with things we will eat more regularly. I do miss my nut mix though.

We don't think winter will be too bad here this year, so it is not as much of a concern as it has been in the past. Fortunately, we are able to can and store fresh items so we have these for the winter.

@MarshaMusselman Fresh food is always better, but not always available. Canned food can at least keep us full and alive! Supposedly, frozen foods are a better choice than commercially canned foods. So we wonder too how much the nutrients have been depleted from the foods we can at home.

@PatZAnthony I work in a grocery store so even when the weather is bad, I have no trouble picking up a few things when we're low. I will be slowing down my storing of food products because now that neither of my daughters eat with us we are eating less canned vegetables and don't need the quantity we used to buy. At least they are good for another year or so, but I'm beginning to wonder if there are any vitamins in produce other than when it's made or eaten fresh. It's something I may be researching one of these years.

We would find it difficult to get our heads around needing to stock up for bad weather. It just never gets like that here.

@MarshaMusselman We give thought to those with what we call "real winters" @MarshaMusselman Our winters are fairly mild, but we have no appreciation for the cold or snow and have plans be elsewhere soon enough.

@PatZAnthony at least your winter there are less cold and less snow compared to what we might get in Michigan. I'll take your winters any time.

So, the squirrel made it his storage room. We don't have winter so I want to know, what kind of foods do you store for winter. I suppose you have big freezers where you store your meat and delis.

Yes, probably a squirrel was the culprit! Many here can foods that are available in the warmer months so we have these in winter. Usually, these include tomatoes recipes and soup recipes, all in glass jars. Very few things are frozen b/c if the electric goes out, we'd have that to deal with. If we have the right fruits available these can be canned also. It is funny we call it canning when we put things in jars!

The only thing I have stored over the winter from warmer weather are blackberries, either in the berry form to add to muffins or pancakes, or in jelly form. Unfortunately this yeat was a bad year and I only got one cup of berries, enough for a jar and a half of jam.

@PatZAnthony One year I got enough berries that I made about 9 jars of jam, made many muffins and pancakes, and still had enough frozen over that I still had a bag or 2 left by the time the next harvest was upon us.

@PatZAnthony I would like a large generator to run the 2 frigs and 2 freezers. We were out a week last year and ended up losing a lot of food. I am a little paranoid and do not trust it once it has been thawed and it was.

Funny about the acorn stash. We buy nuts, walnuts, almonds, pecans and hazelnuts, out of the shell, but raw then I roast them in the oven. We eat a handful or more every day.

We always have full cabinets and freezers full of food but luckily we live in an area where it is not closed down for days due to snow. Do you live in a town where you get a massive amount at a time?

Yes, I do store additional items during the wintertime. Avoiding venturing out after a snow storm even with plowed roads is no fun Good thing that squirrel did not venture back to get his stash of nuts while you were warming up your car

No, on the contrary it's the summer time here. I am in Canberra so not that hot but I see no reason to store nuts/extra food even during the winters when the temperature goes into the minus. By the way we have coles in our neighborhood open all 7 days a week. I know case in your country is different due to snowfall though.

We are about to have a large storm and stores, schools, banks, most businesses will close. As we consider it unsafe to be out in the ice and snow @suni51 we try to keep plenty of what we might need in the house.

We have a pantry that is big enough to hold months of food. But my husband is the chef and the buyer of foods so he makes sure everything is used. I remember my mother's basement cold room and every few years we would clean it out and throw away a lot of food that was too old... Because we live in a small town the grocery stores are a minute away in the car, so there is really no reason to over stock. (and Canada, known for snow has billions of snow plows, we rarely are afraid to just hop in the car.)
