I Smell Wood Smoke!

This afternoon my husband and I drove to the neighbouring town for a coffee.
Driving back home we decided to take the slower more scenic route along the Northumberland Strait.
It was a calm afternoon (no wind to speak of), temperatures just above freezing (2°C) and overcast.
The last time we drove this piece of road it was a clear, windy day.
We hadn't noticed the smokey aromas.
Today there was a smokey haze hanging over the community of Petit Cap. The smokers were busy.
There are at least twenty smokehouses along this short stretch of coastline.
What are they smoking?
Herring, for export to the West Indies.
This is apparently a big business for this area.
Who knew?

It certainly wasn't an unpleasant smell. I like the scent of a wood fire.

@Morleyhunt that is also my question. I don’t smoke. I don’t drink. But I have to eat. Haha

I live in Canada as well. This morning I smelled that distinctive odour. I don't find that a pleasant smell, and for the life if me can't understand why anyone would want to smoke it.

I certainly didn't know that smoking herring in that area was a big export business. Passing through and smelling the smoking must have been a nice experience but don't know if I could smell it on a daily basis.
I do enjoy going outside and having the aroma of a fireplace in the air.

I would much prefer the smokey aroma if smoking herring, that the foul stench that goes from the nearby legal grow op.

My husband and I both felt it smelled very nice. This is the first time I noticed the haze....but that was the weather conditions. Usually it is quite windy, and the winds tend to be offshore.

I love taking scenic drives and learning something new about the area. Sounds like you made a find with the wood smoke.

Wow, that's interesting. Smoking isn't all that common here and I don't think it is even very popular.

Oh wow. I'm happy it was the smoke you smelled and not the herring
