I'm Glad They Make FAKE Ones. Aren't You?

christmas tree

There is no doubt that one of the favorite traditions of the Christmas holiday is the fun of decorating the tree. But man oh man! I am so glad we have fake trees! When I was a kid, my mom put up a real tree every Christmas. But I can remember everybody making jokes about my aunt's tree because it wasn't real. In fact, it wasn't even green. But my aunt ignored all of the jibes and wise cracks and jokes and defiantly put that fake tree up every year! When I became an adult, I heard my boss say that he had bought a real tree for Christmas. However, when the holiday was over he was going to plant it in his yard. I was so surprised. I had never anybody say they would plant their Christmas tree! Most people don't plant a Christmas tree after the holiday. In the city where I live there is a place where people take the trees to be turned into mulch. But let's be real. Years and years and years of chopping down trees just to decorate them for one day out of the year is bad for the environment. I'm not trying to put anybody out of business because I know some people grow the trees for a living. But I think selling REAL trees for Christmas should be BANNED! Traditions should not be continued and carried on just because it's tradition! I for one am very glad someone came up the idea of FAKE Christmas trees. Aren't you?
The history of Christmas Trees, when they became popular and what they mean and represent at Christmas.

@MALUSE Just to put the point across you. Please try to understand that except few countries in the world who value environment rest of the other nations, don't take tree plantation seriously.

Plastic is also bad for environment and when we throw the plastic trees it takes from 450 to 1,000 years to decompose. I think that mulch is still a better option, even if people throw their plastic trees every 10 years.

I don't buy trees unless they are living and I can plant them in my yard.

That's fantastic @LadyDuck I either have a living tree to plant later or just decorate with candles and things.

@rebelann I have a fake tree since the times we lived in Monte Carlo, you could not put a living tree in a small apartment and then I could not keep it inside. My little tree is now probably 40 years old and still good.

We had a real tree when I was a young child, but then my parents bought an artificial tree and that is what I have had every since.

I like living trees so I can plant them, if the two I have now survive I won't buy any more trees.

We planned to buy a tree in a pot (not necessarily a pine) and plant it out after Christmas.

Good idea, christmas trees don't necessarily have to be pine.

I have what's called a Money Tree that I could use for next Christmas @JudyEv but I'm inclined to simply plant the 2 pines I have right now and just decorate without a tree when it comes time for Christmas.

@rebelann We got a pine of sorts in the end. It isn't very big yet so I reckon it will last us for a few years.

chopping trees is actually good for the environment. new ones get planted where the trees were cut. they get recycled into mulch or bedding for rodents in pet stores. some areas collect the trees and drop them into lakes to create spawning grounds for fish and other marine life.

Everything in moderation. With proper environmental planning and pruning, the earth can last until Jesus comes.

@MALUSE - the timber industry actually plants more than they cut. they have to if they want to stay in business.

@MALUSE - they just see a tree that was cut, they dont see the planting of new ones. if tree farms didnt replant, they wouldnt be in business for more than 20, 30 or more years. same with guitar making companies.

I grew up with a beloved fake Christmas tree . With my own family now, I think we bought a real tree maybe twice . . . all the other times we had our convenient little fake trees.

We had two fake trees. A little one and a big one. The little one got broke somehow as we moved several times. But the big one is still with us. It's about 20 years old. Maybe older. I stopped counting once my kids grew up.

We had a real tree a few times, but we enjoy our fake tree. We're both allergic to the lovely aroma of pine, so no real wreaths for us either.

I only had a real wreath because one of my bosses gave me one. I never had a problem with allergies but my husband has terrible allergies.

When we bought our house in MO long ago, the people we bought it from told us the two pines they planted in the yard were their old trees, said they hoped one day someone could just cut one of them down and use it for Christmas! Crazy huh! I guess it would be cheaper that way and you sure wouldn't have far to go to get it, however, I am allergic to those trees so we have had to have a fake one every year.

Allergies are nothing to play with. I hadn't even considered that aspect of having real trees.

I have heard of the growing trend for live trees, so you can plant them afterwards. Have to say that I think artificial are probably the way to go

I don't know that real trees should be banned. That just seems ridiculous to me. As for Christmas trees in general, they are usually farmed just like corn, beans, wheat, soybeans, and whatever other crop you can think of. It's not like people are necessarily deforesting to get them. And as for the environment, it's wood. It's biodegradable. It poses no threat to the environment whatsoever. We use a fake tree these days, but I remember when I was a kid growing up we used to always have a real tree. We'd go out and find a sickly looking one, get a discount on it, and take it home and make it very special. We always got the tree no one wanted and made it special.

My dad always bought a real tree every year (with a root bulb) a few days after Christmas we would plant it. So not all real trees are bad...
