We bought a Buddha belly bonsai

On Christmas Eve we have been invited to dinner at our friends’ place. We have known this couple for many years and have an easy relationship with them. We often get together for a meal and when they were away for a week or two we looked after their two-acre garden. It gave us the chance to take lots of photos and with them we made up a gift book through Vistaprint. Most Christmas’s we exchange token gifts and this year we found this cute ‘Buddha belly’ bonsai. It’s a Ficus macrocarpa retusa. Do you like bonsai? We bought my mother one for her 70th birthday and she had it almost until her death. This one can be kept indoors and I’m tempted now to get one for myself. If it thrives on neglect it will do well in my house.

That's a really cute bonsai and I'm sure your friends will love it (especially if it doesn't need much attention)

This is nice and this really grow huge even planted in ground, unlike other bonsai... very low maintenance needs. good choice. So this is Buddha belly no wonder I always see them in the temples.

@Mavic123456 We saw a great many in the 1990s when we visited an elephant centre in Thailand. I can't find the photos though.

We have never had a bonsai and I wasn't aware of how long they can live for. I love yours.

They can live for ages and ages. There are a number of different plants that they use for bonsai.

This is very nice Judy. I never bought a bonsai because I know that they need a bit of care and I am not good with inside plants.

@JudyEv I have noticed that indoor plants do not like artificial heating. My husband fears the cold and he heats pretty much the house.

@LadyDuck that could well have an impact on plants. We rarely need to heat our house and if we light the fire it is well away from lots of places where I could place a plant.

This one says it suits almost all conditions. Our house is light and airy and I'm thinking maybe it would be happy on the windowsill.

I like bonsai plants. I have some friends who have a lot of bonsai in their garden and it's very soothing to see them.

We saw a lot of them in Thailand. They bring big prices here.

@JustBhem Some are very expensive. This one is quite small so it wasn't such a high price - $28 which we thought was high enough.

@JudyEv That is one thing I have not done - selling plants. I have loads that I throw away. Wish I could. What are Yuccas?

This reminds me of our yuccas. Yuccas bring good prices here. I should really remove the 'babies' and put them into pots to sell.

A plant that thrives on neglect would be a good one. I like the way it looks. That gift book sounds like a good idea.

Thanks. Bonsais take ages to get established so I guess they are within their rights to charge a fair amount.

Its a tree and it seems it is very popular as a bonsai subject. Eventually I found a photo of one that isn't a bonsai. Photo courtesy: Forest & Kim Starr [CC BY 3.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0)]

It's very nice. I tried to have a bonsai years ago but it didn't do very well. I love houseplants though. I actually have a bit of trouble walking around in my house as my cheese plants have become so big!

I actually dig this plant. Someone once gave us a little plant—I forget the name of the plant—but it was in a little basket next to a stuffed turkey with a straw hat on. We can't kill it, but I do love the plant. I always think we need more plants in the house.

@JudyEv They are. I don't now much oxygen these smaller plants actually produce, but since all plants produce it, I would imagine they are good to have around.

They are very attractive because they are miniature trees. This one isn't so much but some are. I'll add a photo of a trident maple. It has been growing since 1895. Photo courtesy: Sage Ross [GFDL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html), CC-BY-SA-3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/) I actually like this type better but they are very expensive.
