Over the last four weeks, Vince and I have been playing lawn bowls in a five-week community competition. Most who are participating have rarely played bowls but go along and enjoy the sport for those few weeks. In case you don’t know, the bowls used are weighted on one side. The side with the weight has a larger symbol on it. So to roll the ball from A to B you have to send it out in a curve either to the left or right depending on whether you’re holding the ball with the weight on the left or right. A yellow ball, the kitty or jack, is rolled down first and you have to get your bowls as close as possible to the kitty. So you aim well to one side of the kitty and, near the end of its run, the weight causes the bowl to arc in towards the kitty. Sometimes the kitty is at the very end of the green or it may be a few metres away so it is quite a tricky procedure particularly if you rarely play. I’m not very sports-minded at all and have a lot of trouble getting anywhere near the kitty but last night the Fates took pity on me and with my final bowl, it hit another bowl which is allowed and cannoned off that to get very close to the kitty as you can see in the photo. Until then our two teams’ scores had been equal but my bowl meant our team won for the night. What a great way to end the evening – well, for me anyway.

It was just a fluke but that's okay. I can cope with flukes.

It's a fun game but I wouldn't want to play every week.

I love to play bocce, but our balls do not have a side with the weight. It is anyway very important how you throw the bocce balls to be as close as you can to the kitty. I love to play.

@JudyEv We never play bocce on grass, I place an outdoors mat on our pathway and we play there. I think it's a bit weird to play on grass, impossible to make one "boccia" roll smoothly on the ground.

@LadyDuck That's very true but we don't have anywhere else to play it really. We did notice the tactics seemed very different when we watched people play in Europe.

I hope you tooted your own horn for awhile!!. The lawn bowling reminds me of Bocce wish is a pretty good game. I know the French also play a game called Petanq?? which is similar.

That's great! Thanks for the explanation of lawn bowls. I know I've read about it from Lany but didn't know what it was. I thought it was bowling on grass instead of in a bowling alley.

Well, it is on grass although ours is artificial but the bowls themselves are different.

@Ronrybs We made up our own cornboard toss game which is a bit of fun when we get together with others. But it's not an inside game either. I can only find this photo of it at the moment. This is in France where we first played it.

Carpet bowls are weighted too aren't they? We have a set somewhere but now don't have any carpet.

If you mean croquet, that is played with a mallet so you hit the ball with a mallet. With bowls you roll the ball along the ground.
