I've just spoilt my husband's day

I know I am very lucky healthwise. I guess I have good genes. My father died at 86 from a massive infection and my mother died at 104. However my brother died at 79 so who knows what’s in store for any of us? I don’t take any tablets and have no real health issues apart from a dodgy back but even that doesn’t give me chronic pain. Whenever I have to fill in a new form at some health department I tick ‘no, no, no’ in all the ‘do you have…’ boxes. Vince has Type 2 diabetes and a minor heart condition and takes a number of pills each day. I’ve been really thirsty at night lately and haven’t been holding back on the sweet foods over Christmas so today I got Vince to take my sugar levels when he did his. He also took my blood pressure which was low for me (according to Vince) 105 over, I think, 42. The blood sugar level numbers may not mean much to some of you but his was 9.2. He tries to keep it under 10 but 9.2 is getting up there. But the part that had Vince muttering in disgust was my blood sugar level which was 5. I think I just spoilt his day. Photo of us on our wedding day.

Good genes are important, and so are bad ones. I had my first colonoscopy at 40 because of the family history of colon cancer. Glad you're okay, and I can understand your husband's disdain for your ability to eat sweets. It's like those people who can inhale an entire all-you-can-eat buffet and lose weight, while if I say the word "chocolate" I gain six pounds.

Vince and his siblings have regular colonoscopies too. I can put on weight easily enough but it's good to know my sugar levels are good.

Your BP seems odd. Never heard of 105/42 which according to me is very low. Don't you feel dizzy? You are made for each other and that photo proves it.

@JudyEv my blood pressure was very low as a teen and young adult. I remember going to a new doctor and her asking me if I was okay and I said yes I was fine why. She said my blood pressure was so low I should be fainting. I did use to faint often but I felt fine that day.

Vince thought it was pretty low but not for me - whatever that means. I think it is naturally in this range.

Lovely photo. I am also like the Energizer Bunny I take my lickings but keep on ticking. No health problems and not pill taking. I usually do not add any extra sugar to even tea but lately, I have had a craving for some cake. My blood pressure has always been low and when I have ever had to have my blood drawn the doctor has always had to smack my arm to get a vein popping up. I thank the Lord each day for my health.

It is a great blessing isn't it but quite easy to take for granted. Then I read of some of the issues other people have to contend with and remember to be thankful.

You are in great health. If he has diabetes, then it makes sense that his sugar levels could be high.

The thing is to not let his levels get any higher. Probably Christmas eating hasn't helped.

I agree @JudyEv even at 95 most elders are dependent on younger folks to lend a hand in just about every part of their lives, I don't think I'd like that.

I certainly hope I'm not still around at 104. There isn't much fun to be had at that age.

I am like you, I take no pills, I have no health problems and from my mom side I should have good genes. I have low blood pressure but 105/42 is too low, this is something you should check with your doctor.

It's a dodgy back not that it matters. I just meant that my back plays up from time to time and it hurts to bend or twist. Luckily it usually goes back to normal after a day or two of rest and being careful.

9.2 for an A1C level is quite high, if that's what this number is. A normal blood glucose level I think is somewhere between 4-6. Any number 6.4 or above is considered diabetes. What a lovely photo, of you and Vince:)

@JudyEv This time of the year is risky, for most diabetics. Everywhere we go, there's candy and desserts being served.
