Abandoned yacht found eight years later off the coast of South Australia

Back in 2010, US sailor, Abigail Sunderland, aged 16, failed in her attempt to be the youngest person to circumnavigate the world. Unfortunately, after rough seas dismasted her yacht, she was forced to abandon the attempt and her yacht, Wild Eyes, was left adrift at sea. Abby was rescued on June 12, 2010 in a joint effort by Qantas and a French commercial vessel. Now, on New Year’s Eve, the upturned hull was found off the coast of South Australia. She said that there could be video footage stored in watertight containers on the yacht. There are no plans to try to salvage the yacht although a navigation warning has been issued. It must have been a very well-built craft to have lasted so long in the water. Abby is now married, living in Alabama and expecting her fourth child.
American former sailor Abby Sunderland said her heart skipped a beat upon hearing her abandoned yacht Wild Eyes was found off the coast of South Australia.

I remember reading about that in our newspaper when it happened, and wondered how her parents let a 16 year old girl do something so dangerous. She was very lucky to be rescued. Some yachts are so beautiful and well built.

You do have to wonder whether some of these events/activities are a good idea. People always have to push the limits, don't they? And yes, it is amazing that the boat is still afloat after 8 years.

@Acefun It certainly must have been a very well-made yacht.

She is indeed a brave and adventurous person at her young age. I did not that of traveling around the world independently. What inspire her to do so? However, the brand of the yacht will see a spike in its price after the news virally report by the media.

Wow! That's quite a story. If only yachts could talk? Another miracle is that I spelled "yachts" right the first time and without peeking.

It's a terrible word to spell. It reminds me of 'Egypt' which I always have to think about when I want to write it.

@1hopefulman I think of Egypt as 'egg-wiped' and that helps.

I remember when she was forced to abandon her yacht. Gosh, for someone who lived the outdoor life she had a lot of children quickly.

@JudyEv I seem to remember one of Australia's swimmers, was it Shane Gould, married and had children young.

That's true. I hadn't worked it out but she is only 24 or 25 at the most.

@valmnz She did. Later they separated. You still see her from time to time raising funds or supporting something. We met her once in Cowaramup in our south-west. She and her husband had a smallholding and some Clydesdale horses. She was at a ploughing demonstration with her horses.

Glad they found her before the boat, that worked out well for her. It would have been really bad if she was found with the boat.

@JudyEv Are they going to just let it keep drifting at sea?

It's pretty amazing that the boat has lasted this long. There are no plans to salvage it at the moment.

@moffittjc It seems so. They put out a hazard alert but I don't know how long that lasts.

@judyev I have friends who set off from Belfast to circumnavigate and they have arrived in Barbados and decided to park the boat there for as long as possible. I'd love to give it a go but I imagine you would spend a lot of the time just getting splashed and my wife's hair would just go frizzy.

Our friends built their own yacht and spent six years sailing the world. I like travelling but I'm not really a water person. I can imagine Barbados must be pretty nice.

At 16, she wasn't very old. She did well to keep her head when her yacht was disabled.

It may not be usable but if the seals on the container held then perhaps it's salvageable.

I guess someone has to want it. Allie and her father said they had all moved on. It would be an expensive exercise too.

Her yacht was surely well built and she has been lucky to be rescued. I wounder if someone will try to salvage what remains of the yacht.

I guess it would cost a lot but there are plenty of people with the means to do it. Some might be interested in the possibility of finding the video tapes and hoping they are intact.

I read about this in the news last night! She was very lucky to survive that storm back in 2010, and to be found and rescued several days later. She was in a very remote part of the ocean when the storm battered her boat. She was very smart to send out the distress signal when she did.

@JudyEv I remember her saying in the news article that she lost consciousness for a few seconds when her boat overturned in the storm. She is very lucky that she was able to recover quickly and summon for help.

That's possible. They might even be able to do it without divers if they were able to winch the boat up a bit.
