Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose - or buy new?

I'm not talking about ordinary household rubbish which goes to the recycling facility but if you have an item which has outlived its usefulness would you find another use for it or would you buy a purpose-made product?
How about a mirror which has been cracked - would you throw it away or would you repurpose the frame into something else?
My wife turned an old pair of workboots of mine into a couple of plantpots for our back garden - they raised a few eyebrows from our neighbours but also a few smiles for her ingenuity.
Have you done anything like this?

It truly depends what it is. As far as using shoes for planters, they seem to sell good here if already planted.

@wolfgirl569 I didn't know that was a thing! I truly thought my wife had invented it

@ThreeTeddies We bring back to the stores electric staff, they recycle, it's not something that we can throw in the garbage bins.

@LadyDuck Safety is a great concern with recycling goods, especially anything electrical

I help the environment, I reuse, recycle and donate to charity extra items that are still functional

@vickyrose More of us should do that. Sadly, my family don't do well in the recycling department

We are always doing stuff like this. Very little gets wasted here and it's surprising how often we can find something that will do the trick among our bits and pieces. I used a scrap of plastic netting to make a cone shape for a Christmas tree. It's a bit over 5 ft high.

@ThreeTeddies It did two years as a Christmas tree; now it's shielding a flowering quince from attacks by rabbits.

If anything has sentimental value I would certainly keep it going

I wish I could say I have, but no, I have not. I will try to use those old long telephone cords out in the yard, maybe make a clothes line out of one of them who knows.

I have seen planters just like that where we used to live. You can tell your wife that she's famous... her workboot planters are over here in Canada. Someone must have seen them and spread the word lol!!!
