How do you season your food?

I know there are many different kinds of seasonings. I guess the ones I use the most are pepper and salt. And lots of it! I use chili powder when I make homemade chili, plus some dried red pepper flakes. With meatloaf, I use Italian seasoning (which includes Thyme and Oregano.) I hear a lot about using Turmeric and Cumin, but I've never tried it. Do you use those spices? I also like to use Old Bay seafood seasoning when we cook shrimp, crab cakes, or other seafood. With so many myLotters from all parts of the world, I'm sure there are many different and unusual ways to season foods. What's your favorite from where you live?

Yes, I love candied carrots! I boil the fresh carrots until tender, then drain the water and add butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon and simmer a while. The kids love them.

I use white and black pepper, oregano and thyme (never together, I am Italian )chili powder and paprika, mustard grains, caraway, cumin when I prepare Moroccan food. I make at home an "Old Bay Seasoning" because t's not available here, I had an old package and I use the different spices and herbs to recreate it.

@1creekgirl When I visited distant countries and I bought this kind of spices I always copied the ingredients, because most of them are not available in Europe.

we mostly use salt and pepper too, but also garlic salt. As we use all three for steaks, roast beef, and chicken. the only other seasonings we use is whole oregano, basil leaves, and Italian seasoning.. which is only for our spaghetti sauce, with the salt, pepper and garlic salt.

I use salt, pepper, chili powder, paprika, basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, turmeric, sage, dry mustard, etc. I like Emeril's Essence and McCormick Brazilian Steakhouse blends too. I've bought some great blends from Penzey's as well. Cumin is often used in taco seasoning mixes. You've probably had it before without knowing it.

Thanks! I knew you would know a lot about different spices. Isn't cumin supposed to be really healthy for us?

@1creekgirl I believe so. Turmeric too--that one is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and is supposed to help protect the brain I think.

I was thinking of starting a discussion something like this. I usually just use a little salt and pepper, and sometimes just pepper. It depends on the food. I was in a panic this morning because I couldn't find the pepper. Luckily I found some.

I use turmeric in my bread and butter pickles I make. I use cumin in chili. I use sage in dressings/stuffing. I use basil in salads both green and others. Yes I use many spices and herbs. Garlic, salt and black pepper are my daily spices.

Yes, we use turmeric and cumin on a regular basis.. turmeric doesn't add to the flavor as such but cumin has a nice and distinct flavor

I am from China. Usually here we like to use garlic, ginger, green onion, soy sauce, corn flour, salt and sugar as the seasoning
