This Is Just So Sad

I know I care to much sometimes but this just broke my heart! One of Tony`s friends, and a sometimes employee of mine, called today and told us that he has stage 3 lung cancer. I have hired him off and on over the years to help me with a rental, He helped with the downed trees last year, a whole week of work and then a few days here and there. I knew he was not breathing good but he is a heavy smoker. What was sad to hear is that he walks 5 miles to get chemo treatments. Tony having lung cancer and no treatments options left to help himself offered him money, that is all he can do but the guy refused. Tony told me to go hunt him a free ride to treatments, Tony thought ACS would help. I did. I found that the american cancer society will find a free ride to treatments. I called him back and gave him the phone number and told him to apply for SSI disability. I just do not know how he walks that far on chemo, most cant walk to the car! That is just so sad. Seems I am hearing of someone daily around Anniston having lung cancer. Most of them were born from 1955 all the way to 2000. I think I need to look into the pollution that was in the air around those years. Surely there is a cause. Do you know anyone being treated for cancer?

Shouldn't his heavy smoking be considered the cause of his lung cancer? I mean, not all those lung cancers are the result of smoking, but it is a leading cause of many lung cancer diagnosis. I'm sure there are also many kinds of toxins in the air we breathe, both inside and outside of our homes. I am sorry to hear this man has cancer. I hope the chemo works. But he also needs to quit smoking if he wants to have a fighting chance.

@andriaperry Ooh, goodness, that is a lot of cancers and deaths in one neighborhood. Has the health department tried to take a look at what is going on in that neighborhood? I remember as a teen there was a similar situation in the town I lived in, where there was a higher incidence of cancer in a certain neighborhood. The residents complained and complained and nobody looked into it. Well, finally the media picked up the story, and after it was broadcast all over TV and newspapers, the health department finally stepped in. It turned out that the neighborhood was built on old farmland, and that particular area had been where the farm stored or dumped all their pesticides and chemicals. They determined that the pesticides were most likely what was causing all the cancers.

I am so sorry, people should stop smoking, it is important, lung cancer is most of the time the cause of smoking. My mother had stomach cancer when she was 70, the surgeon (my brother) removed part of the stomach, she survived until the age of 97 with no more problems. My sister in law diet two years ago of uterine cancer, she refused chemo, all her organs were attacked.

@andriaperry The best solution for my mom was to remove part of her stomach. She had to eat very little food several times a day after the surgery, but at least she lived well the rest of her life.

Right now I dont know anyone. But if there is a big surge, especially in one type of cancer, it needs looked into. We had that here. A few years back several people were getting leukemia. It was traced back to the school they all attended. The land at one time had an army depot plant on it. When the ground was tested it still showed high levels of chemicals in it. The school has now been built elsewhere, but many more people may still be affected by this as they attended that school.

@andriaperry That may be a lot of it. The heavy smoking does not help, but may not be all of it. I lost a cousin to cancer that was first found in his lungs. His doctor said he didnt think smoking was the main cause. My cousin had worked many years in the paint department at Whirlpool dryer plant. The type he had the doctor felt was from the fumes. But since my cousin smoked it would be impossible to prove.

Someone born in 2000 you know of has lung cancer? That is so young! That poor guy walking 5 miles to go to chemo treatments is awful! Being so sick and having to do that could kill him. I am so glad you found out this was happening and found him a ride! It's crazy no one at the hospital mentioned it to him!

Most of us probably do know people with cancer. I'm so sorry to hear about this fella...you and Tony are very compassionate. Our Pastor just had major surgery for pancreatic cancer and a good friend of ours has prostate cancer that has spread.

Not currently, but it is still a devastating disease for sure. Very sorry to hear it. Both for your brother and his friend. I really wish they could find a cure for this.

This is certainly a sad news. As he is a heavy smoker so this may be the cause of cancer. But sometimes this may not be true. Today cancer is a very common disease. I just pray to the GOD for his well being. Have a good luck.
