So, I was stunned when I got the mail to see something from Charlottesville Gastroenterology Associates. I was thinking why would they possibly be sendingme something, I have had no dealings with them, but then I realized as part of a study I had a colonoscopy there many years ago! They were asking me to make a return appointment..No way!!! I will do the camera or take some other kind of test, but not that, and not there..They almost killed me..It was one of the most painful experiences of my life..I do not think it is supposed to hurt that much!! No wonder they need the business, not very pleasant at all.

Mine never hurt. They gave me sedation. The worst part was having to drink that vile puke and endure painful cramps the night before. Barf.

Oh yeah, that drink is nasty. I mixed mine with some sprite or something. I don't think they are supposed to hurt that much, as I recall, I had conscious sedation.

@snowy22315 They could come up with something better than that drink. I think they are sadistic.

Sorry you had a bad experience. Around 7 years ago, my husband had one and it went fine. He had no pain and it was rather expensive even with our insurance. I remember paying 700 dollars. Then last year, my husband's doctor scheduled him to have another one at the same hospital, but my husband ended up canceling it, because the price had sky rocketed in the past 7 years. It was now 3000 dollars! The hospital said we could pay it in installments but we would be paying on it forever and we have other expenses and debts to pay. I think it is awful how much medical procedures have gotten , even with Insurance!

@LeaPea2417 I would try an alternative if possible, unless you have a family history.

@snowy22315 Luckily, I have no family history. My husband does that is why he had one.

@snowy22315 Luckily, my husband had no pain, but after what you said about yourself, it makes me wonder if I should ever have one.

Yuk. it was bad..it really was. Not sure where that dude got his medical degree..UVA is a teaching hospital, and they like to think they are on the forefront of everything..but I have not been impressed.

Oh my, sounds like you had a terrible experience. They are not comfortable but when I had one it didn't hurt, I don't remember much of it at all. Worst thing for me was drinking that nasty solution the night before, gross.

That was gross! It was a terrible experience, however, I guess I went to sleep at some point. I woke up refreshed..The procedure itself..was awful.

The thought of making it is horrifying. I had mine before and it didn't hurt as I was sedated. I was scared before that.

Well they were using conscious sedation supposedly, but in my opinion it didn't help to ease a scintilla of the pain.

@thelme55 Well as I said previously, I will not be going back. I think only if there is a reason should a full scale colonoscopy be done in the first place. Fortunately now there are alternatives.

I have not had one but have taken people in for them. No, It is not supposed to hurt. The doctor hubby had this winter told him he did not have to force as much of the liquid as he did on another occasion. Hubby did not have any problem and he had both a colonoscopy and an endoscopy.

Yes, it isn't supposed to, but for some people it does. I think the level of sedation has to be right.

Why did they require you to do colonoscopy? If they have a reason for you to have one I guess it should be your doctor that should recommend it not them.

@snowy22315 I see. In here it’s supposed to be the doctor will refer the patient to undergo colonoscopy if they suspect any problems. We are not required to have them once every decade because it is costly to many who are at that age.

You are supposed to have them at !east once every 10 years after age 50 i think it is and more if you have a family history of issue.

I want to have a colonoscopy done in the future because my father had colon cancer. I expect it to be uncomfortable, but I hope it won't be too painful.

You had the wrong type of colonoscopy. If you were not in twilight sleep during the procedure (under anesthetic) then it was a different type of test. Done correctly the procedure is completely painless. You have no idea what is happening because your technically asleep. The worst part is the night before prep when you have to drink all this icky solution.

It was supposed to be a standard colonscopy. I would rather have been in the dentists chair than have this done. Medical practitioners vary in their competency, maybe this practice is just incompetent.

@snowy22315 If you have no family history of colon cancer you can up for the stool collection cancer screening called the Cologuard test.

That is how I think it should be,,,I remember every blessed thing..and honestly, I compare it to childbirth. I think the only time I went to sleep was when they were done. HA, maybe the "study" was how much pain you could tolerate before you screamed!

I will never have one unless I have an active problem that requires one to figure things out!!!!! My mom was severely injured during one, they perforated her intestines. She had 3 emergency surgeries is 11 days and spent a month in the hospital. We almost lost her more than once. It left her permanently disabled and it was a full year before she could at least have a bit of a normal life again.

I remember what they were saying during the procedure and I even asked them if that was what they were saying.mthey said yes. I told them initially I would probably need extra sedation..since I did no relax that easily. Obviously they paid no mind.
