A lucky escape for a fellow boatman on our last day on the canal

We’ve recently finished a canal boat journey on the Canal Lateral a la Loire in France. The locks on the canal were very interesting. When we hired a narrow boat in Ireland, we had to operate the locks ourselves but in France apart from a few that operated mechanically, the rest were operated by lock-keepers. Some keepers looked after several locks. We wondered when maintenance on the locks occurred but found out on our last day on the canal. We were told the lock-keepers on seven consecutive locks were on strike and we were told we’d have to stay where we were until next morning. it didn't really inconvenience us too much, however, it did result in a few moments of panic at one point. There were five boats all tied up waiting at the lock and one of the guys off an Italian boat fell in the lock and nearly drowned. Although the lock gates were shut there was still some water going through and a lot of suction. A young man driving past saw what was happening, stopped his car and jumped in to help get him out. He was unconscious when he was eventually pulled ashore but quickly came round. He was pretty lucky though. The photo is of our canal boat. Vince is holding out our boxing kangaroo flag.

He's a lucky young man. I'm glad he's going to be okay. Was that your only hiccup for your trip to find the lockkeepers on strike? A good picture of your boat.

The man who fell in was an older man. He probably swallowed some dirty canal water so I hope he got himself checked out somewhere.

OMG!! He surely had lucky escape. Thanks to the brave young man and his quick reflexes. The photo is taking too long to upload. I can't see the boxing kangaroo flag. Will check it later.

What a wonderful shot. I'm glad the man got help when he needed it. As usual I'll have to look up some of the things you spoke of, I haven't a clue what a lock is other than that lock on my door.

A lock on a canal allows a boat to move from one water-level to another as the land goes up or down. I'll try to write about them soon when I have more time and can work out how to explain it simply.

Even with the young man there, it was quite difficult to get him up onto dry land.

@LadyDuck It was in this case. He was quite a heavy man and was quite old as were most of those trying to help apart from the young stranger.

@Nevena83 We hired it for 12 days so we didn't have to do any maintenance on it luckily.

Wow that is so scary. I imagine it is a risky job and they are paid low is why they are on strike. I am so glad that young man driving by saw what was happening and jumped out of his car to rescue the guy. That was so brave and kind.

I can't help thinking the strikes are organised so maintenance work can be done. And yes, it would have been a difficult rescue without the young man.

I'll explain them in another post. They are used on the canals to move boats from one level to another.

Love the picture of your boat and Vince holding the boxing flag. How lucky that young man was to be rescued. Must have been pretty scary seeing him fall overboard.

The man who fell overboard was an older man but a young man helped rescue him. It was very scary as he disappeared completely for a few minutes.

The boat was as steady as a rock. There was never any movement on it so you could cook or do whatever you wanted.

There was much more suction there than anyone imagined. The gates were closed but the water was still flowing through underneath.

@Ronrybs It is very, very easy to have an accident. One of our party slipped trying to step from the edge of the canal onto the boat. Her shoe didn't have much traction and she almost fell between the boat and the edge. Luckily she had a good hold on the side rails.

@JudyEv My mum told me of when she was younger seeing a boy fell into the lock not far from here. Poor lad was killed. I try to be careful around the canal, it is not just locks that present a hazard
