Today many memorial services are taking place in France and around Europe to remember those from all sides who gave their lives so that we can enjoy our freedom.
I had the fortune to meet some veterans on the QM2 as they made their way across the Atlantic to join in the memorial celebrations at Normandy. These brave men told unimaginable stories of heroism mixed with sadness and joy. The oldest person was 97. The interviewee said many veterans would not be here for the next week they will have moved on. One veteran quickly quipped that he had not intention of moving on and he will return for the 80th celebration. Which made everyone roar with laughter.
They gave a series of talks which were being filmed for the US television.
Remember not only the the solidiers that liberated Europe this was a world war fought in all continents.
RIP to those who suffered and those who are still suffering from despicable acts.

Oh! I missed all the hoopla. I don't watch TV anymore and rarely listen to the radio.(I get really tired of only seeing/hearing about the bad things that happen in the world.) That does mean I also miss the few good things that happen in the world and gets reported, though.
What we need are mixed news articles. I wonder if we can get TV studios and radio studios to only report something bad after they report about something good that's happened in the world?

@garymarsh6 Exactly! I used to listen to the news and read the newspaper every day. I just quit doing both one day because I started feeling like there wasn't anything good left in the world.
And doctors wonder why everyone is always depressed! *shake my head*

We forget what it was like to be in those types of wars. Nothing really engages the whole world, and we all fight for our own interests. I had grandfathers in the first world war. They would be well over 100 now. I have a few pictures.

It was very sobering to travel through the Normandy/Somme regions in our motor-home a few years ago. We would suddenly come across dozens of white crosses in the middle of a ploughed field. A signpost in one field said some tanks had been blown up there and the fires were so intense it was some years before anything would grow on that earth. What a hellish time it must have been.
