Fate Fakers? How To React To Their Posts?

Fate Fakers

I have a problem with catastrophe posts. Do the writers describe genuine cases or are they fate fakers (FF)? The FFs make up diseases and catastrophes. That's not difficult if they have a vivid imagination. If they haven't, a little research can help them. Topics like rheumatoid arthritis, brain tumour, hip replacement, cancer, schizophrenia are waiting to be dealt with. The fakers may know people suffering from these diseases or a visit to google may provide the necessary information. Enough to concoct a heart-breaking story. Topics like, say, teen suicide, domestic violence, prostitution, coping with death make also for thrilling reading. This may sound cynical considering the fact that there are members who have suffered or are still suffering from diseases and catastrophes. Am I accusing them all of faking now? No, of course not. It's a tightrope walk. I may insult genuine sufferers by hinting that I don't believe their stories and I may please fakers when expressing my deep felt sympathy for a made up horror story. How do I get suspicious at all? Well, some stories are simply too bad to be true. I recall a member (from a different site) who wrote about her horrid childhood in the greatest possible detail. I just couldn't believe everything. The member was very diligent and also told us lots about her later life occasionally recurring to former posts. She never made a mistake, it all fitted. This doesn't convince me of the truthfulness, though, only of the artfulness of the writer. Another reason for doubt: I wonder if someone who informs us of their family being wiped out in an accident would go on reading, rating and commenting the next day as if nothing had happened. "I must distract myself", I hear the faker shout. Yet, I don't believe them. Reports 'written for a friend who's too afraid to do it her/himself' arouse my suspicion, too. The internet is anonymous, isn´t it? Why can´t the friend write their own report? Let´s have a look at the different faker types and their motives: 1) We can assume that some members are crazy. The anonymity of the net attracts crazies, each site has its fair share. The things they describe are perhaps real to them. Naturally, they're not open to attack. If they were confronted with the accusation of abusing the site, they wouldn´t understand it. 2) Members who are bored or frustrated for whatever reason may decide to fake a fate which is not theirs to attract attention. Some virtual hugs and kisses from their online friends may do them good. The member with the horrid childhood memories was such a case I think. A loner and proud of it. But somehow her aloneness must have turned into loneliness from which the urge to get at least virtual attention arose. If anyone had accused her, she would have fought like a lioness and denied everything. Should such people be accused? I don't think so, sad sods that they are. 3) I have no problem imagining someone faking a fate and enjoying themselves immensely. Who am I to decide with which activity people should have fun? Should such jokesters be accused of abuse? Well, what harm do they do? Faking in this way doesn´t hurt anyone. They pull the readers' legs and amuse themselves by doing so, let them be! There are worse crimes like multiple accounts, plagiarising and insulting members that should be prosecuted. So if we're in doubt, we shouldn't react at all considering the tightrope situation? Hmm, a difficult one. I either move on or leave an 'Indeed?' in the comment thread. If the story is true, the word doesn't mean much. I may appear a bit silly but I can live with this. If the story is a fake, the faker will understand that I've seen through them. What is your stance?

I tend to be rather skeptical. in the past I've been taken in by stories that were heart breaking but over time began to unravel. I tend to stay away from drama posts and I try to keep my figurative dirty laundry to myself.

I would never fake an illness! That will come back to you, Karma. I know some like to tell their stories and I read and comment. However, for me to tell all of my past I would never! I have had good and very bad. What I would do is write a book about it, if I am going to go through all that crap again by sharing, I wanna get paid well, not pennies. But I am not stuck in my past and I did get over most of it and move on, life is waiting for me, why live in the past. If I get mental I will take pills. If I cannot get over something I will see a doctor. If I cannot pay my utility bills I would die of shame to announce it on mylot. I will never write anything like that on mylot. I got enough day to day stuff to write about and soon I hope to write about better days, coming. But who am I? I cant judge what people do or if their situation is real, for all I know people think I make up this life I live.

I'm with you concerning what to write about. I'd never reveal personal problems on a site like this. If I need an ear to listen to my problems, I'd ask a close friend if I can tell them what troubles me. Besides, there's always danger of some myLotter offering to prey for me. :-)

@andriaperry Message yes. That's different from writing a post everyone can read.

Truly we can come to Mylot and other sites and totally create a completely false life if we choose. I'm sure that some do. To each his own. People can do weird things

Some people seem to thrive on drama and attracting attention. I'm sure there are people here and elsewhere that make stuff up. When a post is just *too much* for me, I ignore it.

There are some people that I know are sick that make me uncomfortable when they talk about their symptoms or if they're having a bad day. I never know what to say. Indeed.

I have found some crazy people here and try to avoid them. I always believe everything people tell me but found that some here do lie. Why lie to complete strangers to me that makes no sense.

Like Sophie, I tend to be skeptical. I know that if something too bad would happen to me, I would not be sitting here replying to comments. As you know good news are no news, so better to invent horrible sad stories to attract readers. They have a carrier to make in journalism.

I suppose revealing a whole heap of stuff is therapeutic to some but I tend to dodge such posts.

time and again, i have always been truthful with my heart ailment, but i do not make posts that would give sympathy, empathy, or worse, monetary assistance to me.

I do my best to give the benefit of the doubt, but if I have nothing productive to add to the conversation, I try to keep quiet!
