Ambushed

I was ambushed this afternoon while mowing my front yard. The attackers were yellow-jackets. Their excuse was that my mower passed over their nest. They stung me several times on the ankles and lower legs, and they got me once on the hand. I was forced to make a tactical retreat through the garage into the house. However, I armed myself with a chemical weapon of wasp destruction and counterattacked. The yellow-jackets tried to swarm me but could not get past my defensive cloud of spray. Steadily, I drove the attack toward the nest and, once it was within range, let loose with all the force at my disposal. Then I left the battlefield and applied first-aid to my wounds. There is still some pain, but no swelling or telltale red welts. It was a short intense battle. I'm not proud of what I had to do. It had to be done, though. They violated the peace terms, nested in our territory, and attacked without warning. I hope you had a less stressful Wednesday afternoon and escaped unscathed from your endeavors.

This was the first time I'd been stung/bitten by a wasp/hornet/bee in 30 years. Mosquitoes and Horseflies, sure all the time. These bites were much worse.

Looks like you had a fierce battle with them. Although humans that we are we tend to make sure that we have to make our place safe like they are also. They just didn't realise that they were attacking someone more powerful than them and it was their lost for protecting their supposed territory.

We have 2 acres of wild woods next to our house and yard. The understanding with the critters and bugs is that they will be left alone if they stay in the woods. This bunch decided to cross the boundary and invade the yard.

@DWDavis Haha maybe they are also claiming you are the one that invaded their territory.

Thank you. No, it wasn't fun. And I wish I hadn't had to eliminate the nest. Normally, I go to great lengths not to disturb pollinators. But I can't have a nest of yellow-jackets in the middle of my front yard.

Fortunately, I'm not allergic. The bite sites still hurt, though.

Poor you. I did get stung once but it was my fault cause I was pulling out flowering weeds and I knew flowers mean bees.

I always take great care around flowers and such where bees usually gather. This was just a random spot in the yard. No indication until they yellow jackets swarmed on me.

@JohnRoberts Considering how prolific wasps and hornets are around here it is amazing that yesterday was the first time I've been stung in 30 years.

@Janet357 An epi-pen is an emergency injector containing epinephrin - a chemical that counteracts the effect of the sting. Many of my students have them at school in case of bee stings because they are so allergic.

You kid yourself on one count here. Yellow Jackets need no provocation to attack the innocent. Okay, you were not innocent, you brought a machine of great destruction over their home and they took that as an attack. Did your chemical attack get rid of them?

When I checked around noon, there were still a few buzzing around the hole. I intend to follow up later this evening.

@cperry2 This evening when they're dormant, I'm going to foam the hole with wasp killer and collapse the hole, trapping the fumes inside with them.

When they do that they have to go. I havent so far but hubby has argued with a wasp and a I think yellow jacket. The latter had built a nest in a bale of hay.

I've had occasion to spray a wasp or hornet nest built too close to a doorway, but usually don't bother them. This bunch had to go, though, as they drew first blood.
