Decorous Accommodation for Respectable Couples

Last night we free-camped in the historic town of York. No, not York in England but York in Western Australia (WA). We discovered the local shire had installed toilets and power-points down near the river and an easy walk from the shops. We have a toilet in the caravan and battery power but to have these provided is a bonus. York was one of the first farming areas to be established when WA was first settled. The older buildings date from the late 1890s. I was intrigued by the advertising on the one in the photo. On the right, it reads ‘Purveyors of the Finest Goods and Services’. ‘Purveyors’ isn’t a word you come across too often nowadays. On the left, it says ‘Decorous Accommodation Befitting Respectable Couples’. You don’t see that on signs any more either, do you?

Very quaint! I wonder whether they still provide 'decorous accommodation' and do they still check whether you are a 'respectable couple' (marriage certificate required, not just a wedding ring, sir!).

@LadyDuck Ha ha! If it was a man on the desk, a little wink (and a suitable extra back-hander) would turn a miss into a missus in a twinkling! VERY rarely if it was a landlady!

@owlwings They were very strict in Italy, not at all in France and not here in Switzerland. I remember when we went to Zürich and we were not already married... nobody asked a question.

I see @owlwings has used the word that came to my mind--quaint. Nostalgic also comes to mind. I bet you guys had fun just strolling around reading the signs.

These are quite old-fashioned words. You probably won't come across them too often.

York is a very old town. It's nice that so many of its old buildings and signs have been retained.

@JudyEv We don't see that often enough, so many old buildings are torn down to build new ones.

@rebelann You would have been refused a room if they'd thought you weren't married.

I guess it depends on the couple themselves!! But I guess back then, you would have needed to be married to be respectable.

That is nice and looks like the olden days. Now no one cares who the people are as long as they pay for their accommodation and don't wreck the hotel or motel.

Those were some big words used back in a time when you'd expect that most of the population weren't well-educated, unless of course they were catering more to the wealthy. Or maybe they used big words on purposes so that the common folk would think they were fancy places of business!
