Does Your Church Have A Squint?

The Church of Our Lady of Mt Carmel and Saints Peter & Paul at Mullewa in Western Australia does. A squint is a narrow aperture which allows the bell-ringer in a church to keep an eye on the priest as he is saying Mass. The bell-ringer stays in a small room which is separate from the body of the church. The squint at Mullewa was about 750mm deep and difficult to photograph. What looks like two people in the background are actually small statues. Two candlesticks are also visible.
In the photo of the altar, the statues are on the right (as you view it) of the tabernacle (coloured green). When the priest offers up the host (bread) to God, he raises it upwards and at that precise moment, the bell-ringer would toll the bell. The only bell I've ever heard in such a situation has been a small hand-bell. The campanile or bell-tower at Our Lady of Mt Carmel accommodates six bells. Big John, the largest, can be heard all over town.
The Church is heritage listed. An architect-priest, Monsignor Hawes, who I recently wrote about, designed the church and built it almost single-handed with occasional help from parishioners both black and white. Work commenced in 1920 and was completed seven years later. Hawes produced a prodigious amount of work during his lifetime, designing and building churches, convents, hermitages and other religious structures in England, Australia and the Bahamas. I thought the squint was a very clever piece of designing.

@crazyhorseladycx I've written another post about them and it seems they're almost rare. I guess Mons Hawes knew about them from his days in England and thought he'd incorporate one in the church he was building. He was very creative.

I know that most Catholic churches here have a squint to allow the Cloistered nuns to see the Parish without being seen. I am sure that the main Church here has a squint, the other 4 of our village I am not sure, but they all have bells, and they all play the bells at the hour every night.

@LadyDuck I can believe that. When Vince was a boy living in a town, there was a huge generator that supplied power for the residents. It ran 24/7 but the only time people ever noticed anything unusual was if, for some reason, the generator shut down and everything was quiet. It's what we're used to that counts, isn't it?

I have never had a church with a squint. That is quite the design. Our local library is in what once was a bank building. The building has a turret or room with something similar.I guess the armed bank guard would watch for robbers from there. Not the same, but this reminded me of it.

I don't think squints were common at all. I'd never heard of it before here but thought it a really ingenious idea.

Any of the churches I've been in haven't had a squirt. I am familiar with the bell ringing at the Consecration of the host by the priest. I wonder why churches haven't followed through with the design of the squirt. It seems like it would be beneficial

I guess it's only needed if the altar isn't visible from some parts of the church.

No squint in the church I attend...but it's part of an office park so it doesn't look remotely like a typical church.

I have never heard of one either!! Unfortunately, our church is rather new so I doubt it!! It would be kind of cool though!!
