Things I should celebrate this day 8-24-'19

Surprisingly I just turned 72 yrs. Can't believe I am still alive. Got an e-mail from History today website. British troops set fire to the White house in 1814 this day. How ironic I should set fire to my last post as not liking how it was received . Today is national Can opener day. So happy about that. We have so many easy to use electric ones today. But when I was a kid they looked like the one in the photo above. you had to push a pointed blade in and saw your way around the top. and they were very dangerous. I was not allowed to use ours. and before that instructions on the cans were " to open cut around the top with a chisel and hammer" So how glad are we for so many great inventions these days. will try and put a link here about it all.

actually back then I imagine there may have been very little can food. Might have been more in jars . you know like canning jars I am thinking. but maybe tins were for special occasion foods.

Happy birthday, friend :-) My nephew celebrated his 2 years birthday yesterday. I think the can opener is not relevant anymore. Most of the cans today come with a ring to pull. It opens the can easily.

@bunnybon7 My grandmother cannot use either of the types of cans, she has not enough strength in her fingers anymore. I guess everyone preffers the cans with the ring, it's like a can opener that comes with the can.

yes so amazing that I am still here too who would have thought. Our parents would have never believed some things. It's a strange era.

@DianneN personal computer use was just starting when my mom got sick. I tried to encourage her to get on the web but she just refused. Guess at that point she was just too sick to deal with learning new things she would have loved . so sad.

Every time I bought an electric can opened it would break soon after. So I switched to hand held crank ones and they last me many years. I think I need a new one soon as it's starting to be hard to turn so I think it's wearing out. I think if I had to use the kinds in the photo as you describe I would not be buying canned food anymore.

yes no way I could use one of the old type today. Last time I used one like you have I had trouble gripping it. now my daughter or her bf does all the food preparations . so no longer worry about it.

happy belated birthday wishes, ms. bonnie! not fer certain what went 'wry with yer previous discussion? i've still one 'f those wicked monkeys, lol. i gotta admit, such's better to get 'nto some 'f the cans these days than more modern'uns. momma's got a sweet electric'un. ya jest pop the can 'nto such, push a button 'n 't opens 'n removes the lid entirely. i've 'bout a 30 yr ol' cranker myself. thankfully i don't use 't oft 'r i'd prolly get fined fer cursin'.

yes I truly love the electric ones because these days have got little strength to use the crank ones. In my youth though I did use one like in the photo many times
