The Horse dares to try a new food

I tend to eat the same things over and over, though I have a pretty extensive rotation. I guess I have "multiple comfort foods." But sometimes I try something new. In this care it was a "boxed" corn pepper soup from Trader Joe's. It is pretty good, but I don't think I like it enough to put it into my rotation. It is a tad sweet and not very peppery. I doctored it up by putting in some chicken from a whole roasted chicken I had bought at Safeway. Then I added salt and pepper. Finally, I added a dollop of cream cheese (I didn't have any sour cream) and called it good. I had sourdough toast with butter on the side. Do you ever try something totally new, just for the heck of it? Do you "doctor up" store-bought stuff like I do?

Haha..good work, Doctor!! :-) Yeah, it happens with me as well. But, I would say, I first experiment with plus or minus of some ingredients rather than trying a new recipe(mostly Indian cuisine). I get influenced by some YouTube videos and end up doing some things. It works fairly with me.

@TheHorse Nope, I've just made some variation of the recipes I've heard before. I still have a long way to go before I experiment something from scratch.

@TheHorse garlic use in moderation is good for health. But excess use can make you feel uneasy in stomach as garlic is of hot nature and causes bad breath as well.

Gotta favorite way to do it? One of mine is garlic cloves. Doesn't work in smoothies, though.

I always cook from scratch, I never buy ready made soups or any kind of "store-ready-made" stuff. The only time we bought a ready made pumpkin soup "just to try" it ended in the drain of the sink, horrible!

@TheHorse No, this is a residential area, no horses and no , only cats and some dogs. Sitting in a corner to play your guitar continuously would surely will not at all be appreciated.

Do you have any horses I can take care of while you feed me for a couple of weeks? Ir vintage loudspeakers to refinish? I can also sit in a corner, shut up, and play acoustic guitar continuously.

Yes, although the "something new" is usually Pretty trying out a new recipe on me. If we both like whatever it is she cooked, I might ask her to cook it again, once in a while. When I am making something that comes in a bag or box, I usually do add things to it. Most of the ready made stuff is too bland if you only follow the directions that came with it. I want my foods to catch my attention and maybe do a little dancing on my tongue. (I do have to draw the line at spicy-hot foods, though. I can't eat something that burns both on the way in and on the way out! )

@TheHorse Oops! Yup! There is an excellent Thai place in Springfield that Pretty and I both like, but we don't go there unless we're planning on heading straight home! Then we fight over who gets the bathroom first! (The other person, usually me, just has to hold on and wait!)

Heh. If I'm feeling a little...constipated...Thai food is sure to help.

We don't go right outside the box, so to speak, but sometimes Vince gets very creative. I think he thinks recipes are just a guideline.

@JudyEv my wife is fond of onion and garlic in most dishes. And puts them even though I sometimes ask her not to add them.

@TheHorse Our son in Ireland cooks quite a bit now but says that you always start off frying onion and garlic. Then you might see what the recipe is entitled and add whatever that says! That's one way of doing it I guess.

my wife actually eats that soup. She tried to get me to as well. I said, if you can guarantee it is not baby puke I might try it!

Heh. Did she guarantee it? It is a bit Linda Blairish, isn't it? I prefer Andersen's Pea Soup when I'm in an Exorcist state of mind.

@DocAndersen Did you watch The Exorcist? I heard pea soup sales soared! (That's a lie.). I do love Andersen's pea soup, even if it looks like the vomit from the possessed girl in The Exorcist.

It was just a tad too sweet for me. I think I am going to try and duplicate my step-mom's cold potato soup. That rocked my teenage years.

Well I don't cook much. But I have tried new options in making Indian fried breads with different veggies at time(called as Parantha).

@TheHorse actually we call it Indian breads but we make them from wheat dough. And yes we add veggies to them in grated or crushed form.

@TheHorse Those made with Potato and Cauliflower stuffing. Carrot stuffing is fabulous in the winters. One can also have tomatoes or onions in two layers of dough and then cook them.

I like to doctor up canned soup with things like cheese or rice (or both). BTW, I went by our local Trader Joe's yesterday and searched inside, just in case you were there.
