Is Life All About Work?

I gotta eat so I cook, I have to have clean dishes for the food so I wash them, I need clean clothes to wear so I wash them..... the list goes on and on. I have to have money for the food and dishes and clothes, so I work. One job is not enough so I got a few jobs. I went walking to keep myself in good health and I am picking and gathering for a new life, a new job. Changing jobs. Will this one job be easier than the three combined? We work to live, no matter what, we have to eat and have clothing.

Although we have to work to live, we don't have to let our work define who we are. Work is just a means to an end. My life used to be defined by my work, but I learned a long time ago that there is more to our lives than who we are at work. So now I define my life on my terms, not based on the work I do. I hope that makes sense.

@andriaperry I've been through those days as well, where I've gone long periods of time without days off, so I can definitely relate to what you are saying. In those days, I thought work defined my life, and to some extent it did. I was in a deep rut, and I didn't realize it until my dad passed away. That was when I decided to re-evaluate my life and redefine my purpose.

@moffittjc In a way that is what I am doing, trying at least, to redefine my life, to suit me better than others.

I do enjoy my work but I am tired, I don`t have the easiest jobs, that is what has to change, something tht suits me now, not what did 25 years ago.

@andriaperry The yard is getting there. Still no lawn mower, but I have been doing a lot by hand and it's taken some time. I have been doing one thing at a time.

It is alright to work while physically able; very nice to have good-paying jobs; earn for the future, then retire to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

We do have to work, in order to pay bills and such. But it doesn't mean that it has to take over us.

@andriaperry Sometimes, it's best to do it that way. Sometimes we do need to change how we do things and how we think and see things.

Depending on the types of work you mean. Nowadays, machines can work almost all our works, like cloth washing, step climbing Lifters etc. And that's how it had to be, even machines should take all work we do, Human is the greatest creature, so we are limitless in making other things to work for us..so we do the simplest jobs like directing nor handling then, Robots now works in factories etc

I do understand that the tasks have help now with machines and they are not as hard as they were back in the 1900`s, however, try working three jobs and doing all the household chores, all the shopping for food, preparing if not growing it myself, mowing the fields while one of those jobs is a 24/7, 7 days a week caregiver and you have to stop in the middle of anything to tend to those needs. Forget t.v. and video games, no vacations. You leave one job to go to another, none stop. This is all human.

@andriaperry well am glad you said of 1900s and what about the 1200s, and above, don't you see the world is improving, that's the time human walk from country to another with legs, horses or donkey. So today, its very much easier and will be much more easier with time...when you will just sit and command all things you want and as you wish and they will all happen to your taste...world is improving.

@andriaperry We do because we cook and clean and that is never-ending. I try to only do laundry once a week but it means hours of washing drying and folding and then putting away.

It should be, I had to learn to leave my job at work, when I left. If you are working for yourself, then you can't really escape work. I burned out, I worked in one job for 24 years, and I took an early retirement from it. I don't live on a lot of money, but I am much happier. I worked in another job for 5 years until the company closed and that too began to bore me. I was tired of coming home having to cook and just felt I knew what I was doing every day, same thing. When I started having health issues I was at the job I retired from and felt so much better when not there, Then I was dealing with my ex, and that was wearing me down, with all I had to do in a day, I would come home and just want to go to bed, between being sick and dealing with his family, I was just ready to run away. I still had my daughter, and school functions, which I didn't mind. I just feel there is more to life than work, and at some point you just have to have mental health days. I never took sick days or really had a real vacation , because of work commitments.

@andriaperry Yes, I dreaded getting up every single day, we had a new boss come in , during my last few years, Then I was laid off, so opted for my retirement, after working that other job for 5 more years. Funny thing I worked, but never did a real vacation, it wasn't in the budget, and I didn't have time.. Now I am free but just am not up to taking a vacation , just locally, and I just feel that I need to save money rather than spend it , if that makes any sense. I do think a day of doing something different if you can helps out greatly. I had hobbies, I used to be a bowler, and did fun stuff, went to the gym, but it just wasn't enough if you know what I mean.

Struggling to find enough energy to get things done, I know what you experience. Instead of having one job, I had three part-time jobs to support my two children. This almost drove me into the ground, six feet under.

Yes for the majority of us work and chores are part of living. Even retirement does not change that it just shifts responsibilities elsewhere. As this quote says...

Jeff's right though. Your work shouldn't define your life and who you are; and I don't think that's the case with you. Take a break, don't overdo and relax some times.

Definitely a truth here. That being said, I also work to save so I don't have to work as hard. But then, I love money...so I wind up working hard to make more of it anyway even if I don't necessarily need it.

@andriaperry Onward and upward to you. I hope you achieve all of your goals. As for me, I am definitely in love with money. But it has worked well for me. I still live life, though, and pretty much have what I want and spend what I want. I just don't have to worry so much anymore about spending dwindling my bottom line. My dividends more than make up for any over spending I might do, and so the principal remains largely untouched. So long as I am adding to the principal with new earnings as I still work and so does the wife, it just adds to the dividend and interest pool every year.

well you need money to afford the things you want. and you can't have money if you don't work....unless you steal or rob or perhaps you were lucky enough to be born rich and you don't have to do anything but enjoy your life.
