What does November mean to you fellow Americans? I'll bet the first answer is Thanksgiving, right? Do you really believe Native Americans feel the same way? One of our stupid presidents thought November should be about Native American Heritage, with Thanksgiving on everyones brain no one ever thinks of them, have you?
As communities across the U.S. gather to honor Native American Heritage Month, we must center the lives and stories of LGBTQ and two-spirit Native American people.

He was Chief Dan George. He was popular in the 70s and 80s and tried to bring awareness about his people and all they'd lost.

I have mixed feelings about this being of Native American descent myself on one side and the victim of natives killing my ancestors on the other. It's sort of like being Irish and English, my ancestors hated each other.

They were only trying to protect their home for which I cannot condemn them, wouldn't you fight for your home? Native Americans didn't start the slaughter, we did....or rather some of our ancestors did, I'm a mix too.

There were plenty of skirmishes between the french and brits between 1610 and 1792 and both sides convinced some natives to help them @BelleStarr buy 1792 a lot of natvie americans were already completely displaced and some of those that survived the attacks on their people decided they might as well join the whites.

@rebelann Well since my native ancestors married white settlers, I guess we solved the problem. I don't condemn them but they did horrible brutal things to my one ancestor and she did not deserve that. They were not defending their land they were in the pay of the French and killing settlers, the natives were not local to where my ancestors lived.

I'm sorry that I cannot relate to that very well because we don't have Thanksgiving here although I had tasted a Thanksgiving turkey when I was in California one Thanksgiving day.

This post is not about Thanksgiving, it is about the Native American tribes that existed before Europeans destroyed so many of them.

Only the rich tribes have them, some of the smaller poorer tribes live in really bad situations.

@rebelann I feel for them. I really do. But they are essentially still Americans and they have the same opportunities that you and I do to get ahead or stay behind. The past is the past. Time to move on is what I say, and essentially they (the Indians) have. There are just still some Americans that feel we have to apologize for something.

I had no idea. I was actually complaining that one of our presidents thought November should be a month where we thought of our indigenous people which seems rather pointless since mose Americans are too busy think of Thanksgiving.

What we did to the Indians was wrong we took their land from them and left them land that was not any good for growing crops.

Many tribes were hunters and followed game for food but when our ancestors put them on reservations they weren't allowed to follow their game anymore and what's worse is we killed their food supply.

We don't do Thanksgiving for many reasons. Actually, we don't do a lot of things others do! Still waiting for "Columbus" day to be thrown out and "Indigenous Peoples Day" to be put in. Think it will happen while we are still here?

Me too. JJ made a really good point, columbus was never even in North America, I doubt he was even in Peru, but he did introduce these lands to the conquistadors who pillaged and murdered their way northward

November is or was my Mom's birthday month. Its harvest celebration time for us. You bring up a thoughtful question.

I just think it's an insult that African Americans are celebrated in February and the media makes sure we all know about their plight but in November all the hype is on Thanksgiving. Native Americans deserve better than that.

I had never heard of the national day until I opened my computer a couple of days ago and found out about it. There are a lot of days I don't think about. I have Native American ancestry and I'm glad I do, but it's really not a big deal to me. It's more important that I'm a person who honors God first.

That's ok too. I honor my Native ancestry what little I have because of the way they honored Mother Earth and Mother Nature.

We have 'Australia Day' but our indigenous people want it renamed 'Invasion Day'. Which is fair enough. '

I would agree with them. All our indigenous peoples were respectful of their environments whereas Europeans only destroyed what they saw.

I don't do Thanksgiving but I do give thanks everyday for my life and those of my kritters. I also try to make people aware of what the red man has suffered. Few ever even mention those tribes that were brutally annihilated.

Yeah, that's the problem. They should find a better month for the remembrance of Native American Heritage like maybe August where there aren't any other holidays to put a blight on what we should all know about here in the US.
